The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, JUNE 14, 1878.

A meeting, at which between fifteen and twenty were present, was held last night for the purpose of ascertaining whether" it was possible to form an Athletic Clubj and what steps to take to make a commencement. Mir F. N. Jove» said that the evenings were felt to bo very dull by many of them, th«*ro being nothiug to do but Saunter about and drop into the public houses, and that he and a few others had determined to try if they could not provide gome source of amusement. The present was an excellent opportunity for forming such a Club as that suggested, as he believed they could obtain the old OddFellows' Hall at a moderate rental, and there were jusfc now three or four excellent athletes in town who were prepared to instruct others as well as to exercise themselves. So confident was he of success that he was prepared to make one of five to be responsible for a year's rent. It was then proposed and carried unanimously to establish an Athletic Club and Gyuiuasium, and Messrs A. Chiaholm, C. Moore, J. Batchelor, Akersten, and Askew were appointed a Committeo to canvass for momberß.

Ma. P. Cooke has been appoiu'ed Chairman of the Town Local Committee of Education, and Mr 11. D. Jackson, we understand, although not a member of the Committee has kindly consented to undertake the duties of Houorary Secretary. The Nelson Harmonic Society last night p'ded another item to the large debt of gratitude that the Nelson public already owe to a body of ladies ami gentlemen who have for many years unselfishly devoted so much t.me and pains towards amusing their fellowcitizens, and, by almost invariably rendering l'gh class music, have kept up the standard of musical taste. The ball was comfortably filled, aud the lady performers mustered very strongly; the gentlemen, as has been unfortunately the case for a long while, were but thinly represented, the tenor part being especially weak. The opening part of tho grandest of masses, Mozart's Twelfth, an old Nelson favorite, went well, with few hitches. The most noticeable feature in the next piece, a portion of the Hymn of Praise, Wos the duett "I waited for the Lord," for soprano and alto, which was admirably given, the voices of the songstresses blending to perfection. The air " Return, O God of Hosts," from "Samson," waa given in a most finished style. The duett from tho Creation also went well. In the second part, the song " Forget me not," received a well deserved encore. The pianoforte solo " JS'oti c ver," was applauded to the echo. Much pleasure was given by the quaint sailor's song "Nancy Lee," which was rendered with great spirit. Bishop's " Tell me my heart," was delicately warbled; in striking contrast to this was " The Desert," which was given with immense spirit aud vigor. Linley'g song " Alice," was most sweetly and pathetically sung, and was encored. Tho last chorus, " The Silver Streamlet," was somewhat marred by the undue predominance of the bass towards its close. On the whole the concert was very successful. The Government have not yet received any information as to the prices* obtained for the new loan, but it is hoped that it will be found to be above par which was fxed as the minimum price.

A meeting of tbe householders was held in the Dovedale schoolroom on Thursday night, when about twenty were present, the chair being taken by Mr John Win. The following persons were proposed and seconded, namely, Job ttest, Johu Win, James Hose, James Smith, Thomas Hall, Jesse Lammas, William Thomas, Kichard Langman, and Mark DavJes. The following was the result of the ballot: -J. Win 20 J Best 19, T. Hall 16, J. Smith 12, R. Lang^ man 9, J. Rose 8, M. jDafies 7, J. Lammas 5, W. Thomas 5. The seven highest were then declared duly elected members of the Committee. The Committee subsequently met, and appointed Mr Job Best secretary, and Mr John Win chairman.

Capt. R. A. Edwin reports :—" Watch barometer: bad weather approaching from any direction between northeast and north west with heavy rain."

The strong common sense of the public ig always in the end mor« than a match for fraud, imposture, and pretention. Probably within the last twenty years, five hundred attempts have been made to instate or pirate Udolpho Wolfe's Sohikuam Aromatic Schnapps, all of which have been disastrous to tho parties concerned. Neither sceret fraud, nor open competition can affect the popularity of this famous invigorant. It stands at tho head of the tonics and correctives of the age, as the supreme remedy for dyspepsia, general debility, nervous weakness, urinary disease and rheumatic affections — Advt.
