The same night ifc came on a hard gale from the sea lasting all Saturday. The bar has been fit to take every day since, and six other vessels have since arrived, none having seen the Otira. The Stella arrived on Saturday. j Wellington, Tuesday night. The Rialto has cleared for London with a cargo of 3531 bales and 948 packages of wcol, 73 bales of skins, 161 bales fof flax, 1546 pkgs of tallow, 10 pkgs of leather, and 598 cases of meats, valued at £90.895, and 17 passengers. Dunedin, Tuesday night. The Dunedin Herald this morning, in commenting on the trial of Whitaker v. Jones says that the cost of the prosecution will be considerably under £200, while that of the defence, according to the "bill of costs recently delivered, will amount to £2117 14s. Among the items comprising the bill are tbe following:— Paid Mr Rees, £540; paid Mr Rees as a refresher, £275-, paid Mr Hislop, £270; refresher to Mr Hislop, £137 10s. It is stated that other items equally outrageous could be culled from the bill of costs presented by Messrs Rees aud Hislop. Doherty aud party have returned from Dusky Sound by the steamer Maori, bringing two tons of specimens from the copper lode there. They broke some twelve feet into the corner of the lode, and report the prospects exceedingly favorable. The specimens they have brought are very rich in the more valuable copper ore, with indications also of native copper. All the papers published here, with the exception of the lime*, severely censure the Government for giving advertisements only to those papers which support its policy.
