A lectore entitled " Travels by sea and a tour on the continent of Europe" will be delivered in the Wesleyan Church to-morrow evening by the Rev S. Ironside. Such a subject, when handled in the manner we feel sure it will be by the reverend lecturer, should form the text of an unusually interesting lecture. The proceeds will be devoted to the Sunday School Enlargement Fund.
Wb remind our readers of the opening meeting of the Young Men's Christian Association, which is to be held at the Provincial Hall this evening after tea, which will be laid in the building lately used as the Criterion Hotel.
Last night Messrs Wilkins and Cowles gave their second lecture at the Public Hall, Stoke, but on account of the unfavorable state of the weather, the audience was small. This, however, made no difference in the programme, as the subjects were given in their entirety according to pdvertisemeut, namely, " Scenes in Africa " and " Jessica's first prayer " The lanterns were well manipulated the pictures excellent. The lecturer quite rivetted the attention of his hearers throughout Briefly, it was a capital entertainment of its kind, and merited a largeraudience. s
Thb monthly inspection of the Town and Port Volunteers took place kit evening, when thore was a fair muster. In the Botanical Reserve they were put through various manoeuvres by Major Pitt, in all of which they acquitted themselves credit ably. In the firing of a. feu de joie, however, there was certainly room for improvement The Major then took the feeling of the Volunteera regarding a review on the Queen's Birthday, but there being a want of unanimity among the men he decided to have no parade on that day, but said that the Naval Brigade would flre a royal salute from their battery on Haulashore Island. He announced that the whole of the district force would probably be reviewed by the Defence Minister on the Prince of Wales' Birthday. J. R. Dodson, Esq., the Mayor, has been gazetted a member of the Hospital Committee.
