The Malvern Hill coal is now being used on railways with satisfactory results. There are 927 waggons on the Canterbury Railway, being an average of 2U wagons per mile. M. Fitzgerald, licensee of a suburban hotel, was fined £5 for spitting in the face of a Mrs Williamson outside the Court. Mrs Williamson had been a witness in a case against Fitzgerald for illegal liquor selling. Nbw Plymouth Monday. The Supreme Court was opened this morning by Judge Gillies. There are five cases on the calendar, three being charges of horse stealing. Alexandria, Monday. The Premier and suite have arrived here, and have gone on to Kopuakataiu as a matter of form, but will return this evening, and proceed to Hikurangi overland to-morrow. Timaru, Monday. Messrs Jones and Hart report:— Fat cattle, auctioned at £9 15s to £11, averaging 27s 6d per lOOibs; 2 to 3 year old steers and heifers £6 15s to £7 10s, 15 to 18 months £4 15s; good dairy cows, £7 10s to £14 10s. The demand for sheep is dull, cross-bred lambs, 5s 6d to 6s 6d; merino ewes, full mouthed, 3s Ud; draught horses, £48 to £57; medium, £38 to £45; light, £20 to £33; hacks and light harness, £7 15s and upwards. The survey of the railway extension from Alburyto Burkes Pass in the Mackenzie Country is commenced, and is expected to be finished in three weeks. Dunedin, Monday. Two hotels were totally destroyed by fire at Kingston yesterday. The fire originated in Kerr's upstairs, and extended afterwards to Anderson's. Three men were roasted to cinders, John Dougherty, R. M'Cann, and the third unknown. Small personal property only was saved. No appliances were available for extinguishing the fire when discovered. Anderson's was insured for about £800 in the New Zealand and National Companies, and Kerr's was insured for £600 only. Both were new houses, and near the Kailway station. John Abeam, a well-known miner, was instantaneously crushed to death yesterday while working in shallow ground only four feet deep at the Eight, Mile, Arrow. New Plymouth, Tuesday. The Urunui Hotel was burnt down last night owing to an explosion of a kerosine lamp in the bar. The insurance is £800 on the building and £200 on the stock, equally divided between the Standard and Imperial.
