The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10, 1878.

A Contemporary says tfeat ''over COO Natives have placed their names on the Electoral Roll oi the Gisborne district, Poverty Bay, and will entirely command any Election." If the Natives are in a position so largely to influence the result of elections in ordinary electoral districts, it surely is time to put a stop to special Maori representation in the Assembly. We understand that the Suez mail from Nelson overtook the Arawata at Port Chalmers, where it was transhipped from the Taiaroa. The views of the Holy Land being colored photographs may be relied upon as faithful representations, and therefore are possessed of peculiar interest. Members of the Artillery Volunteers will find something to interest them in our telegram to day, where it is stated on the authority of the hon Col. The Post complains of the manner in which the Wellington census was taken, and says that the population is actually 2000 more than represented by the returns. It says :— " We have beard of many instances in which no papers were left at houses, and many others where the papers were never called for. Again, in some cases the people in the bouse did not know how to fill up the papers, and neglected to do so, and returned them to the collector quite blank, although there were from nine to twelve persons in the house. After making due enquiry we are convinced that these complaints are well founded." These errors are attributed to fact that the enumerators sub-let the contract by the job. The largest brown trout on record (says the N.Z. limes was cought in the Shag River last week by Mr McDonald, who presented it to Mr D. Stewart, of Dunedin. The fish, which was caught with a minnow, weighed 481bs, measured 2ft. 7in. in length, and 19in. in girth. We believe this is the largest brown trout yet caught in the colony. [The length and the breadth of the trout we can credit, but the 48lbs in weight 1 Really we must draw the line somewhere.] A Press Agency telegram dated Kumara, April 5, says:— Some days ago Mr C. Brown, editor of the Kumara Times, issued a writ against Eather Henneberry for slander, laying damages at £1000, but it was not served, in the hope that Father Hennebery would retract. To-day Mr Brown's solicitor received an extraordinary letter from Father Hennebery, covering ten sheets of paper, threatening that if the action were proceeded with the police would-be at Brown's door. Brown has since instructed his solicitors to serve the writ at once.
