[PRKBS AGENCY.] Wellington, Tuesday night. It is reported that Major Heaphy has been appointed Commissioner of Annuities in connection with the duties of his present office. (Inspector of Native Reserves.)
_ It is.stated hfero authoritatively tbat there ! is no truth in the statements that disagreements exist between Ministers, and tbat certain beads of departments in the Civil Service have been obstructive. The Post says: — "We are assured by the present Government that they have received the most cordial, ready, and painstaking support and assistance from all the departments of .the Civil Service, that tbey have found the members of the Civil Service most able and efficient officers, and that no obstruction or insubordination whatever has been encountered by the Government in carrying out their views either in questions of general policy or in their projected reorganisation of th? service." It is reported that the following changes will be made in the Civil Service: — Mr Seed to be relieved of the charge of the Marine Department by Captain Johnson as permanent head, with an increase to his present salary of £100 per annum, to be taken from Mr Seed's salary; Mr M'Kerrow, Assistant Surveyor-General to be Under-Secretary of 1 ands, Immigration, and Goldfields'; Mr Huntley Elliott to be Assistant Under Secretary f>r Lands and Immigration^, Mr Oliver Wakefield to be Assistant Under-Secretary for Goldfields, In consequence of the intended abolishment of the Central Store Denartment each department of the Government will be held responsible for it 3 own stores. Eur t her reports of finding alluvial gold near Wellington are prevalent. The body tit Captain Allen of the schooner Maiden City was found to-day floating near the breastwork. An inquest will be held tomorrow. Allen has been missing since last Tuesday, Wednesday. The Colonial Bank has just completed the purchase of St Andrew's Church in Lanibton Quay, having a sixty feet frontage, forj £125 per foot. CiiRiSTcnuRCH, Tuesday night. The Tramway Company's share list has closed with sufficient applications to justify commencing operations. A man named German Charley has been , arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the recent garrotting case. David Adams, of Mount Hastings, has had 2000 bushels of oats destroyed by an incendiary fire. Mr I.awson, Traffic Manager, being about to leave Canterbury to assume tbe appointment of Commissioner of Railways for the North Island, was presented by the Railway Department with a silver service and a gold service. Auckland, Tuesday night. A large full-rigged ship, supposed to be the Golden Sea from Melbourne, to convey Cooper and Bailey's circus to Callao, has ibeen sighted off the Bay of Islands, i Sir G. Grey declined a banquet offered by ,the Hamilton settlers. [ The new Auckland Club was opened today. ._ The Government have refunded the fine : imposed on' Captain Logan some time ago on account of overloading the Hero. This decision was arrived at because the alleged offence was committed under tbe Australian certificate, which the District Judge refused to take cognizance of, and as it has since been ascertained that New Zealand certificates are recognised in the Australian Courts tbe ; Government consider that New Zealand i should -reciprocate. Sir G. Grey and Mr Sheohan proceeded to .Waikato to-day. Colonel Whitmore, at the Artillery Volunteer inspection last night, said that in order to provide some harbor defence for the Colony, the Government intended applying to the Imperial authorities for a number of sixty-four-pounder converted rifle guns, the same as those on board H.M.S. Wolverine and Nymph. These in proper positions would make the harbors impregnable to cruisers. It was intended to entrust them to the Artillery Volunteers, and to encourage that branch of the service. Tauranga, Wednesday. , The Wolverine with the Governor arrived yesterday. The Governor, Commodore, and suite landed at the town wharf, having left tbe Wolverine under a salute, the yards being manned; they were met on the wharf by the Town B"oard and principal townspeople. An address was read by Mr E. Gecome, chairman of the Town Board, and another by Hobepa Hekuta, a Ngatugi Chief. His Excellency replied and then walked to the cemetery to see the graves of the Gate Pah heroes, and then drove out to the site of the Gate Pah. The Governor expressed himself much pleased at the public reception. The town and wharf were tastefully decorated and carpeted, and a handsome archway was erected. The Governor, Commodore, and suite started for tbe Lakes at eight oclock this morning. The Hon. Mr Fisher arrived last night, and accompauied the Governor to-day.
