[PRESS AGENCT.] THE PRODUCE MARKETS.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency report under date London, March 31st: — Wool market weaker, and competition decreasing in medium and inferior greasy and washed ; combing maintains former rates; scoured wools -unchanged; advices of short supplies from Australia have been received up to date. 186,000 bales have been sold. The sales close on the sth April. Tallow is dull; best mutton, 39s 6d; beef, 38s 6d. Wheat is firm. The Californian harvest is abundant. Adelaide, 64s per 496 lbs; New Zealand, 525; leather market, flat; best sides, 9fd.
Wellington, Monday. _ Mr Carruthers, Engineer-in-chief, has resigned. It has been arranged to appoint two gentlemen (one for each Island) in his stead. In the Supreme Court, some of the Grand Jurors drew attention to the fact that they along with their partners in business had been summoned on the jury. Mr Justice Richmond said it was not usual to compel two members of a partnership to serve. He allowed two jurors thus situated to retire.
The Customs revenue for March was £18,783, against £15,578 for March, 1877.
Tuesday. Mr Stephenson, mate of the Hawea, who met with an accident last night while the vessel was going down the harbor by a block falling on his head, having never recovered consciousness.

The census returns give the population of the Municipality of Christchurch at 1 3,402 including 6,884 males and 6,518 females, as against 10,294 in 1874. Timaru, 4,968.
The Corn Exchange Committee has resolved to form a Limited Liability Company, for erecting and managing grain stores in various paris of Canterbury for the convenience of farmers.
The hot dry weather is having a serious effect on the grass.
r ' Mr H. Milner, of Long Beach, Ashburton County obtained 1640 bushels of wheat from 22£ acres. In some piaces the field yielded over 100 bushels per acre. Sir Cracroft Wilson is a candidate for the Cheviot district, vice Mr L. Harper, resigned The Timaru Customs revenue for March was £1485.
Tuesday. Mr Clark's report on the drainage of Christ church wa9 issued this morning. It is very voluminous, and strongly condemns the use of the Rivers Avon or Heathcote for sewage. He 'also condemns Mr Carruthers' proposal to discharge the sewage by the present outfall drain into the ITeathcote estuary. He confirms Mr Carruthers 1 opinion as to the desirability of underground sowers, and the necessity for a pumping station to the east of the town belt, but advocates the conveyance of sewage after it has been raised by pumping to ihe Corporation reserve on the sandhills, and the conversion of the latter into a sewage farm. He estimates the cost of the scheme at about £190,000, and the annual expenditure for interest and maintenance £1?,100. The Drainnge Board meefs to-day to discuss the scheme. A three-roomed house and its contents were totally destroyed by fire this morning.
i GRAiiAMStowK, Monday; The Customs revenue collected here for March was .£2,251, against £1,539 for March last year.
A good-looking reef was cut in the Kuninui Company's reef to-day, from the 640 feet level. No gold seen.
. _ Auckland Monday. Rewi has sent a, letter to the Governor regretting that he did not see him at the Waikato, and he invites his Excellency to come to Orakau, where the last fight took place and shake hands.
Some difficulties are yet to be arranged before the native meeting comes off at Hikarangi. Sir George Grey goes into the country on Thursday.
Blenheim, Tuesday. Last night three stacks of barley were burnt at Messrs Redwood Bros farm at Spring Creek. The destruction of property would have been less, but for a strong wind that was blowing at the time. The origin of the fire is unknown. A threshing machine stored close by was Jiaved. The Insurance was £300 in the South British.
