[PRESS AGENCY.] Wellington, Wednesday. The Wellington is to sail for North at midnight. Passengers— Messrs Balse, London, Somerville, Hornby, Count De Zaba, Dr Somerville, Miss De Zaba, Master Woledge. The well known Empire Hotel has been purchased by Messrs Gilmer Brothers, of West Coast, for seveu thousand pounds; also the adjoining freehold known as Turnbull's old stores for about seven thousand. Tho same purchasers bought the Duke of Edinburg Hotel a few days ago. Auckland, Wednesday. The Working Men's Club was opened last evening, the Mayor, President of the Club, in the chair. The Governor, Bishop Cowie', Mr Sheehan, Judge Giilies, and Colonel Whitmore delivered speeches. The Governor, in speaking of the facilities offered to working men to attain the highest positions in the Colony, referred to Mr Sheehan, who had deservedly attained his position by energy and talent. Mr Sheehan in the course of his speech, said he regarded hiimself as a working man, and the son of a working man, his father having been a journeyman carpenter in Auckland. He could point to many houses in the city which his father assisted to build. The Governor and suite were afterwards entertained at a banquet. He drank success to the Club in champagne. Wednesday. Several incipient incendiary fires have been discovered. In one instance an attempt was made to burn down the school buildings. Sailed — Tairoa. Passengers : Messrs Richmond, Willcock, Beaumont, and Ord, Mr 3 and Miss Best, Mrs and Miss Watter, Misses Ward and Richmond. Christchorch, Wednesday. Edward Quarterman, who met with an accident on the railway on Monday, had both legs successfully amputated yesterday. The Premier addressed a crowded meeting at Ashhurton last night, when votes of thanks and confidence were unanimously carried. He proceeds to Akaroa in the Hinemoa at noon to-day. Greymouth, Thursday. The races yesterday were a great success, although the attendance was not so large on account of the rain. The following are the principal events : — Goldfields Handicap — Banker 1, Jasper 2, Native 3. Seven started. The race was won by half a length. Grey Valley Stakes Handican— Elfin King 1, Grey Momus 2, Native 3. Five started. Betting 3 to 2 on Elfin King, 5 to 3 against the others. After a splendid race, Elfin won by half a length. Novel Race — Rover 1. Five started. Consolation Stakes— Septimus 1.
