To the Editor of the 'Evening Mail.'
Sir — I noticed in your yesterday's issue an article on the inquiry into the cause of the fire at Mr Holland's house at Motupiko. Your correspondent recommends as a partial preventative against fire to paint the shingles with hematite. I have made many experiments with hematite, and 1 find that it alone with oil is far better thau any other paint on shingles both agaiust fire as well as weather, as it keeps them from cracking and warping. But if the following composition is used it will be found much better:— lulus hematite in dry powder; 2lbs dry slacked lime, finely sifted; 2llis Portland cement, dit o. Mix the hematite, lime, and cement together well before you add the oil, which should be boiled if possible. — I am, &c, E. Okr. Nelson, March 13, 1878.
