The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, FEBUARY 28, 1878.

Those who are interested io the arrival* of steamers complain that' the signalman wants waking up. The smoke of the Murray, on her way up from the Wtst Coast, was distinctly seen from the wharf and from town this afternoon an hour before she was signalled. A second conversazione will be held in the All Saints' Church Institute this evening, when the doors will be open from 7 until 16 o'clock. /The pictures and other exhibits still remaiu on view, and there will be musical selections and readings from popular authors. The annual general meeting of the members of the Nelson Institute will bo held this evening at 7.30. There was a sitting of the Assessment Court in the Motueka Valley Institute yesterday. There were no appeals, i»nd the proceedings were of a somewhat melancholy character, the only two individual* who were present being the Judge and the Secretary to the Road Board. The Horticultural Show takes place tomorrow in the Provincial Hall. Intending exhibitors are reminded that all productions ! except cut flowers must be in the room before ten o'clock. The doors will ba open from two until five, and from seven to nine. Professor Hennicke, who has the reputation of being an exceedingly clever magician,; will make his first appearance in Nelson at) the Masonic Hall on Saturday evening. Ha is accompanied by Madame Stella, whose performance of the Arabian Box mystery is . described as something marvellous. The Lady Barkly will make an excursion trip to Motueka on Saturday, when a cricket match will be played at- Motueka bejiween the College and Motueka teams.' The steamer will leave here at 6 a.m.,. re turning *t ! * , *0 p.m. Should the present -fine weather prevail no doubt a large number of people will avail themselves of this opportunity. The annual picnic of the scholars ef the Presbyterian Sunday School and the other young people of jthe congregatioa ef Trinity Church took place yesterday aftefrnooa. It was held in a paddock in the Maitai Valley, kindly lent by Mr Eatwell, where * large number of children assembled wiUs their teachers and other members of the congregation. The Kev P. Ca'der, after referring to the new Education Act, and the responsibility of churches and parents for the religious instruction of the young, distributed the prizes and other gifts to the Sunday school children. The rev. gentleman announced that after defraying expenses of the picnic, a considerable surplus would be available for the augmentation of the Sunday School library. Notwithstanding the adverse circumstances against which the Harmonic Society has had to contend of late in the protracted illness of the conductor, and tbe temporary absence of Beveral of its leading members, the concert last night passed off most successfully. It was of a miscellaneous character, comprising several choruses, which were given with considerable spirit, and reflected no little credit, not only on the singers themselves, but on the gentleman who had temporarily assumed the baton, and had undertaken the conduct of the practices, the result of which afforded so much pleasure to the large audience last night. A number of our old favorites contributed several very pretty songs and glees, most of wich were loudly encored. Indeed, if applause may be taken as a criteron of success, the members of the Society have every reason to be satisfied with the result of their efforts to afford to the subscribers a couple of hours real enjoyment.
