[press agency.] Gisborne, Tuesday night. A disturbance unequalled in Gisborne for its lawless character occurred to-day. The aggressors were a party of laborers employed by Mr Lawrence, the business manager of the late Captain Read, aud the dispute was in connection with the ownership of some houses, and a town section sold by Paora Kate to Mrs Kate Wylie. The case came before the Court recently when Captain Read's agent faiied to show any title to the land. To-day, however, they endeavored to destroy the houses by bringing a large party of men with screwjacks, axes, picks, and shovels to level the house with the ground. Without a moment's warning, too, the chimney was pulled down, and the inmates had to seek shelter in the streets. The street is no .v strewn with furniture, and a mass of debris fills the rooms. The natives came to the rescue of their relative, Kate Wylie, who has purchased the property from the chief, Paroa Kate. Over 100 people were present, and at one time bloodshed seemed imminent. To-night the natives will camp on the laud to prevent another similar attack. Wellingion, Tuesday night. The new Governmenc offices had an escape from fire this afternoon. A clerk, who was sitting in one of the rooms belonging to the Native Department, was alarmed by the smell of smoke, and roused the messengers, who, in about a minute, had the hose ready. Upon chopping through the wood -work, which was found very much charred inside, the fire was found to have originated in a corner between the first flat and the ground, bdfc how has not yet been ascertained. Mr Barton was released from gaol to-day. Thero was no demonstration. Patrick Shine, previously couvicted at Auckland and Wanganui, and Thomas Maher bave been committed for trial for a robbery at Elliott's Hotel, Pakuratahi. Frederick Catlin, for a criminal assault on Selina Franklin at the Lower Hutl, was also committed for trial at the next Criminal Sittings of the Supreme Court. ) Lyttelton, Tuesday night. Arrived— C. W. Turner aud Co.'s barque Lurline, from London, 86 days from the Downs, and 79 from land to laud, with a full cargo, but no passengers. Auckland, Wednesday. Thatcher advertises for a list of all Levy's debts, intending to publish it in New York and San Francisco. The working men's club obtained more than the required number requires. Captain Somerville of the steamer Durham, report seeing a large sea monster resembling a serpent off Brown's Island. Thirty feet of the monster appeared perpendicularly out of water. The crew and passengers corroborated his statement. Timaru, Wednesday. The Resident Magistrate sat to a' late hour last night hearing the case of perjury arising out of the affiliation case heard a short time age. Flora M'Kiunon was committed for trial at the Criminal Sitting of the District Court. John Loudon was dismissed. Mr Wakefield addressed his constituents at Temuka, and was well received. At the conclusion he was asked several questions. A cordial yote of thanks was accorded him. Christchurch, Wednesday. Quann You, a Chinaman, has been committed for trial for rape on a girl 12 years of age at Opawa. The Pigeon race from Rakaia to Christchurch, 30 miles, was won by Mr Deacon's Antwerp in Ih 9mins. -
