CORRESPONDENCE.

To the Editor of thk" Evening Mah,.'

Sir,— l aui quite at a loss to see how, with common reason, Mr Gray can, after the exhibition he made of himself lately in the Council, solicit the sxipport of the ratepayers to return him to the position he has, on his own scruples, vacated. When wo see that the whole of the members are of one opinion respecting the vile accusations he thought proper to make against Mr Lightfoot, it is very evident that if, by any mistake, he should get returned to the Council, he would be ouly there as a nonentity, for I fail to see how his most sanguine admirers (if he has any) can expect JjgjL to command the least rc?pect amongst raose who have already expressed their opinion on the ridiculous spectacle he lately made of himself. It would have been more becoming on Mr Gray's part ■ c , instead of asking a member to tell the Council at the last meeting that he did not mean what he said about the Surveyor, he had come boldly forward aud apologised for the accusation he made. I would remind Mr Gray that what we want in the Council is men who do mean what they say, and I trust the ratepayers will take thi3 opportunity of ridding the Council of a member with such crude notions of his own importance, and place in his stead a man who will command the respect of his fellow-Councillors. To say the least, it would have been more prudent ou Mr Gray's part to have waited (before offering himself as a candidate for future honors) till he knew that he would not have to answer before a higher tribunal for the scandalous remarks he thought proper to make against Mr Lightfoot.

Yours, &c, Common. Sknsb,
