[PRKSS AGENCY.] Wellington February 18. Mr. Sheehan went to the Wairarapa this morning to finally complete some arrangraents with the Maoris. He and Colonel Whitmorc leave to-morrow, per Rangatira. The following is the result of the poll for the City election: — Barton 506; Pearce 462; Hutcheson 263; There was less excitement than is usual at election time. Mr. Barton's son, in returning thanks to the electors, said he recognised their coming to the poll in such, numbers was due to the fact that they were endorsing the policy of Sir George Grey in the first place, and in the second affirming that his father was suffering for his defence of the right against the unjust treatment of the judges. A final effort to blow up the Eli Whitney, which has long been submerged a short distance off the end of the Queen,s wharf, was made this evening. A charge of about 30lbs. of dynamite, equal to one hundred pounds of gunpowder, was used. All the arrangements were very successful. She brings 33 saloon and 17 steerage passengers, and 365 tons for all ports. She has 20 tons of cargo for Nelson, but no passengers. She sails for Dunedin at 4 p.m. to-day.
