CITY COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held on Friday night. Present, all tho members except Cr. Pickering. Cr. Harley made the usual declaration, and took his seat. A letter was read from Mr Jackson, the lessee of the marine baths, complaining that owing to a leakage there was no sufficient water for bathers at certain stages of the tide. Referred to the Public Works Committee. A letter was received from Mr A. W. Scaife, the Secretary of the Insurance Companies Association, with reference to the by-law relating to the storage of kerosene, also calling attention to the fact that the General Government did not insure their buildings to the full extent, which was no doubt owing to the efficiency of the Fire Brigade. He therefore thought that they should be asked for a subsidy. The first portion was referred to the By-Laws Committee, and with regard to the latter part it was decided to recommend Mr Scaife to place himself in communication with the captain of the Brigade. A letter was read from Mr Lightfoot calling attention to certain charges of dishonesty made against him by Cr. Gray, and asking whether the Council considered that there was any ground for such a charge, and if so that a full investigation might be made into the circumstances.— Cr. Everett said that such an accusation had Jcertainly been made, and he wished to state that the report which appeared in the Mail a few nights ago was entirely correct. He desired to take this opportunity of bearing testimony to the truthfulness of the report because he had heard that it had been called in question.— Cr. LirTLB also spoke as to the correctness of the report, and said that Cr. Gray had told him the next day that he did not mean to say what he had said. That wa3 the only extenuating circumstance in connection with the affair that he knew of.— Cr. Levien thought the reporter had let Cr. Gray down very easily.— Cr. Hooper fully endorsed what had fallen from Cr. Everett with referencte to the report.— On the motion of Cr. Hooper seconded by Cr. Little it was unanimously resolred, That this Council is of opinion that the imputation of dishonesty made against the City Surveyor by Cr Gray was entirely unfounded and unwarranted. Cr. Hooper wa3 appointed Chairman of the Public Works Committee, and Cr. T. Harley was appointed a member of the same Committee. On the motion of Cr Levien it was resolved that tho Surveyor be instructed to report upon the cost of extending the water supply along the Waimea ftoad, aa d the probable retarns therefrom.
