Wellington, Sunday, The City of Sydney arrived at San Francisco on January loth, with the New Zealand December mails. ,
The Zeahuidia left 'Frisco on December 31st (.two days before contract time), with the London December mails.
Monday. For a long time back a Committee of Inquiry has been investigating certain matters in connection with claims for extras by the contractor for the waterworks, and in respect of which he was paid one cheque for £2970 on account. During Mr Blackett's examination he took exception to one item of £1011 set down as an extra, saying that it belonged to the original contract, and ought not to.be an extra. The contractor, thereupon enclosd the cheque in dispute to the Mayor pending the conclusion of the investigation, remarking that he did not wish to be. paid a penny more- than he was entitled to. Very kaen interest is taken by the public in this enquiry.
i The Wakatipu left Sydney on the Bth inst, and, arrived last night. Sailed: Wellington, for Nelson, at. 3 p.m. Passengers: Messrs G. Webb and Goodall.
i Auckland, Saturday. The explosion of a kerosine lamp last night led to the destruction of two cottages at Ouehunga.
Blenheim, Saturday. The acceptances for the Marl borough Cup are Lara, Treason, Strongbow, Septimus, Doncaster, Orange, Lightning, and Mamina'.
: Dunedjn, Sunday. ; The cricket match, Australian Eleven v. Otago Twenty-two, commenced yesterday, when there were about 2000 persons on the ground. The weather was cold and squally, with a heavy thunder and hail storm in the afternoon. The Australians took the field, and the Twenty-two were put out for 124 runs in their first innings'. When time was culled, the Australians had lost three wickets, for 53 runs. Play will be resumed on Monday.
. " ■ Mouday. The game was resumed at noon to-day and at 1.50 p.m the Auxtralian team were all out for 92 runs, leaving the Otago twentytwo 32 to the good.
Bluff, Monday. Arrived — Albion Shipping Company's ship Tiniuru, 1316 tons, Captain Stewart, 79 days from Glasgow, with 240 immigrants, all well. There was no infectious disease ou the passage during which there were two deaths and three births. Sixty of the immigrants are for the Bluff and the remainder for Duuedin.
