EDUCATION BOARD.
The Board met yesterday. Present: The Bishop of Nelson, Rev J. Leighton, Messrs Barnicoat, Campbell, Dencker, Talbot, Shephard, Rout, Wastney, Tarrant, Coudell, Jackson, Fairhall, Atkinson. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Resolved, That the Chairman and the Secretary be requested to proceed to Wellington at the cost of the Board to confer with the Hon the Minister of Education and the Secretary to the Education Department on several important matters connected with the working of the Education Act 1877. Resolved, That the further consideration of the question of subsidising schools, and of constituting Reefton, Charleston, Addison'a Flat, and Brighton, education districts be deferred until after the return of the Chairman and Secretary from Wellington. The following recommendations of the Works and Finance Committee were adopted:— I. That the "Works and Finance Committee be authorised to have plans prepared for a girls' school in Toi-Toi Valley, and to call for and accept tenders. 2. That £100 be allowed for clearing and draining the site of the school at Westport, and for erecting out offices. 3. That the second half-yearly instalment of Committee allowances be paid to the credit of the several School Committees on February 7th. The recommendation of the Town Committee that Miss Annie Frank be appointed assistant at Haven Road school, having been read, as well as the recommendation of the Board of Examiners to the same effect, it was resolved th?t Miss Frank be appointed. The recommendation of the Board of Examiners, that Mr R. Ray be appointed master of the Karamea schools, was adopted. Resolved, That suitable house accommodation be provided for the master at Karamea. Resolved, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners, That Miss Frances Guy's appointment as mispress at Brooklyn be confirmed. The consideration of Mr Fairhall's motion to increase the salary of the master of Lower Wakefield boys' school was deferred for another month. Resolved, That £5 be allowed the Upper Moutere Committee to defray cost of furniture at Neudorf school. Resolved, That a sura not exceeding £250 be set apart for building a master's house at Richmond, and that the Works and Finance Committee be authorised to call for plans and tenders. Resolved, That the Karamea be proclaimed an education district. A list of the persona who had been nominated by the several School Committees of the district of Nelson having been laid before the Board, it was resolved, That the the day of election of members of the Board be fixed for March 7th at 2 p.m. Resolved, That the time and place for the election of the Cobden School Committee be February 20th at 7-30 p.m. at the schoolhouse, Cobden. Consideration of grant of £5 for burning bush at Karamea was deferred for a month. Resolved, That £4 10s be allowed for painting and school furniture at Motupiko. Resolved, That a copy of a letter from the lion. Secretary of the Upper Wakefleld Committee be sent to the Chairman of that Committee, with a request for an explanation. Resolved, That the petition of the memoria'ists residing south of the Wai-iti river, that the Upper Wakefield district be subdivided, be acceeded to, and that the memorialists be requested by the Secretary to define the boundaries. An application foj a new school at Redwood's Valley having been read, Mr Dencke was requested to enquire into the matter, with a view tq his obtaining more definite information as to the number of children of school age likely to attend, &c. The Board declined to take any steps to have the Ahaura constituted an education district, as requested, the Grey Valley being about to be annexed to the Westland district in April. The Secretary was instructed to advertise for a master for Westport boys' school, applications to be received until February 19th. Resolved, That an application for a sum to cover the cost of enlarging the school and master's house at Dovedale be referred to the Works and Finance Committee. The question of payment of arrears of Road Board rates was also referred to the Work 3 Committee, Notices op Motion. 1. Mr Jackson: That the salary and allowauces to be paid <o the Inspector and Secretary to this Board be equivalent to those now paid to Inspectors in districts of similar magnitude in other parts of the colony. 2, Mr Wastney ; That £7 be allowed to the Suburban North Committee to defray the cost of painting and repairs.
