DujfEniN, Tuesday. The final innings of the Australian team did not come off, owing to a heavy downpour of rain. The result is a drawn game. A dinner to the cricketers takes place tonight. Mr Hislop, the newly appointed Secretary to the Education Department, leaves for Wellington to-morrow.
A man has bee a received into gaol under sentence of 48 hours for a debt of £2 12s, including costs. This is the shortest debt sentence in the gaol records of Her Majesty's dominions.
There is considerable disappointment at the cricket match not being played out. The team leave for Oamaru to-morrow.
Bldff, Tuesday. Arrived— Ringarooma. She left Melbourne at 2.30 p. m. on the 9th, and experienced moderate southerly and S. E. wiuds until arrmtig off Milford Sound in consequence of thick weather until the afternoon of the 1 4th. Steamed round the Souud, and passed the Heads at 6. 30 p.m. ; had strong \V. wiuds and squally weather to the Bluff, arriving at 430 this afternoon. She leaves for Duuedin to-night. The Ringarooma briugs 72 saloon and 40 steerage passengers, and 226 tons of cargo for all ports, Passengers for Nelson —Messrs Coorabes, Gough, Ellerke, Gale, Seattie, South, Bensemaun, Eyken, Dynon. MonuaneV Steele, Phipps,~-Lawrence, Sutler/ Dr Ronan Lawrence, Miss Harley, Mrs Davis, Miss Suddon, 4 steerage,' aud 14 tons cargo.
Auckland, Tuesday. A telegram received today states that the Hero is detained at Melbourne untit the 25th inst. ' " '
Walter Bennett, alias Buller, was arrested to-day, charged with forging and uttering four cheques. The accused had only been in Aucklaud eight days. He 'was remauded for enquiry. 1

Arthur Utting has been found guilty of fraudulent bankruptcy. Sentence deferred.
The Primitive Methodist Conference has closed. The increase for the past year has been, two ministers and 120 members; church property, £4000. The Bey. Mr Dean has been appointed Editor of the Connection paper and General Secretary, to reside at Wellington. The following stations of ministers have been fixed for the issning year:— New Plymouth -John Standrin and A. G. Jeynes ; Wellington— John Dumbell and Win. Spotter ; Auckland— Daniel Pulton, P Wright, Jone3 ; Christchurch-Wm. Tinsley ; Invercargill— C, E. Ward ; Timaru — J. Sharp ; Manawatu — Jas. Glover ; Ashburton and Geraldine— B. Warlow and J. Westbrooke ; Thames — John Nixon' ; Dun-edm-Joshua Ward. and two from England ; Glreendale circuit, missionary ; Oamaru and Waimate, ditto. Two other ministers are expected from England shortly. A girl named Doherty, having been rebuked by her mother for companionship with another young vagabond named Home, picked, up a knife with which she was cutting bread,. and severely stabbed her mother in the head. -The girl was arrested.

Replying- to a statement published that Colonel Whitmorewas about to retire from the Cabinet in order to assume the office of Chief Commissioner of the Armed Constabulary, the Post says:— "Owing to Colonel Mpule's resignation as Chief Commissioner of the Armed Constabulary, a difficulty has risen in performing certain official acts required to be done in conformity to law by the Commissioner ; it has therefore been arranged that such duties previously devolving upon the Commissioner . will now be added to those of the Minister of Defence for the time being. Colonel Whitmore will be gazetted Commissioner of Armed Constabulary, in addition to his present portfolio of Colonial Secretary, but will receive no salary or allowance in connection with the former office. This arrangement as to tke Commissionership of Armed Constabulary wiU continue so long only as Colonel V/hitmore reuiojqsj a, member of the present Government. It is un,<jlefr.§(;qp.d that there is no intention to revive the appointment lately held by Colonel Moule," Wednesday. This year's assessment of the city property for general purpose* is £207,605 heiug an increase of £30,000 over last year. The city valuation for water purposes is au increase over last year of £33,966.
