.„ , , London, Nov. 2. England has offered to the Porte to mediate as between it and Russia for a settlement o£ terms of peace. The acquiescence of Russia is considered to be doubtful.
The military prospects of Russia in the war are brightening, and as she has received reinforcements, the plan of a new campaign is being developed. At the Colonial Bank of New Zealand banquet Mr Cargill presided, and Sir Julius \olel made an important speech on the financial position and resources of " the colony.
, _ November 9. In the Earl of Beaconsfield's speech at the Guildhall banquet he stated that it was his opinion that the time had. arrived for mediation to be attempted in the TurcoRussian war. He was of opinion that European intervention would put an end to the war. He further aaserted that should the war continue, England would maintain her neutrality unless her rights and interests were endangered.
■ . _ . November 10. Ihe Russians have been encountered by the Turkish forces in the vicinity" of Erzeroum. The Russians were defeated.
