[pes ringarooma.] Melbourne, Nov. 13. The Council are unlikely to get much from the Governor on presentation of their address re pp yrrenfc of members. The reply is already known although the address will not be presented until today, and fche effect of it is that the Go; ernor will be guided by fche advice of Ministers.
Considerable progress has been made with the tariff in ways and means, but the Bill considered by the Assembly on Thursday was quite different in many respects from the one previously submitted. It is the intention of the Government to appoint a I* «yal Commission to consider the tariff during the recess, with a vievr of securing some permanence.
The spring race meeting concluded on Saturday. It was a grand day, and the ladies came out in force, while the costumes were elegant and varied. The settlimr up yesterday was scarcely in favor of the bookmakers. Joe Thompson paid away £21,000 in four bets alone, including £10,000 to the owner of Chester, yet so fkr there have been no defaulters, ail engagements have been promptly met.
During the gunnery practice by the Nelson in Hobson's Bay on Friday, a shell bounded from the water on shore at St. Kilda, went through a workshop, which was luckily unoccupied at the time owing to it being a holiday, then proceeded nearly a quarter of a mile and made a large hole in the brick wall of a house. It was extremely fortunate that no one was killed or injured. On Sunday morning a gatekeeper named Harris and his wife were killed by a passing train on the North-eastern line before they could open the gates.
In an action brouhgt by L. L. Lewis against the proprietors of Punch, a verdict was given for defendant.
Levy the cornet player, is a passenger by the Ringarooma. He yesterday filed his schedule in order to obta : u release from actions brought against him by professionals.
