Wellington, Saturday. Ihe Mayor has received a communication from the Government to the effect that in future all sums forwarded for the Indian Famine Fund will be forwarded to London free of charge. £2000 in all has been telegirohed Home from here.
An attempt is being made to establish a Deep Sea Fishing Company. It is intended to carry on trawling at Port Underwood and to have a curing and smoking shed here. It is stated on good authority that the value of the property destroyed by the Gisbo ne fire is equal in amount to the tojal amount of fire insurance premiums paid to fche various Insurance Companies at Gisborne and Nap-.er during the last two years. The only nominations for the olce of Mayor to-day were Mr Joe Dransfield formerly Mayor, and Mr George Elliott Barton; Mr Hutcheson, the Sate Mayor having withdrawn from the contest.
New Plymouth, Monday. The Mayor remits another £200 to London to-cHy for the Indian Famine .Fund, making £400 from Taranaki. The country lists are not all in yet.
Blenheim, Monday. Thompson's saw mill in Waitobi Valley was burnt yesterday, the loss being about £1600. The cause is unknown. The insurances are : Imperial, £750 ; Victoria, £500. An inquiry will be held to-morrow.
Christchorch, Monday. The City Guards in a match wifch fche Dunedin City Guards, ten men a side, fiva sl-ols each at 200, 400, and 500 yards, scored 5 14, Dunedin 419.
Port Chalmers, Saturday. Hugh Harper, an elderly man, of dissipated habits, was committed for trial on a cb.rge of manslaughter, fche victim being his wife, also of intemperate habits. The evidence showed that deceased died from loss of blood from a wound on the head, caused by Harper beating her with a poker.
Blhff, Monday. The Ringarooma left Sandridge on the 13th and arrived at the Bluff at midnight on Saturday, anchored outside and came in next morning early, discharged cargo, and sailed for Dunedin a few hours later. She brings 49 saloon and 44 steerage passengers, and 354 tons crvgo for all ports. Passejgers for Nelsoi: Messrs Barker and Ede, Rev Mr Elton, wife, child, and nurse, Mr and Mrs Cock, Miss Robinson, and 15 in the steerage, also 13 tons of cargo.
Timabu, Monday. Mr Hart reports sales of fat cattle at 30s •f lOOlbs; store cattle £3 15s to £6 ss; heavy draught horses, £55 to £60; plough and farm, £30 to £48; hacks, £14 to £30; bacon, 7d to Bd-flb; hams, 9d to 10d *£* fb; flour, £17; potatoes, £3.
Grahamstovw, Monday. The Mayor has declired to call a public meeting to express an opinion on tho political situation, giving as his reason that as the business of such a meeting would be the discussion of general politics he, as Mayor, should keep himself aloof, and he therefore declined officially to do anything which might be construed into political bias in a Municipal functionary.
