[PRESS AG ESCV.] Hoicitika, Thursday. In Lynches Sweep on the Melbourne Cup for £-2,400, Waters, of the Prince of Wales Hotel, Dunedin, drew first Horse. Iv Hansen and Evans' Sweep for £3000, Alexander M.ckay, Native Commissioner at Nelson, drew the first horse, and the second and third horses fell to holders of tickets in d iffcren. parts of the West; Coast.. Harris's rst three horses fell to Hokitika and Kumara ticket-holders. Wellington, Thursday, At the sitting of the Vice- Admiralty Court this morning re the Eli Whitney case, regarding which an enquiry was made by the Registrar of the Supreme Court and two merchants, the report was confirmed, aud £1420 awarded to Captain Williams, the petitioner.
Mr Thomas reports produce prices as follows :— Flour, colonial, £16 ; Adelaide, £19 j oats, 3s 9d to 4s ; bran, lld to ls ; wheat, 4s 6d ; hams, B£d ; bacon, 7_u" ; cheese, 7d to 8d ; potatoes. £1 5s to £1 15s ; maize, 4s 6d to 4s 9d ; pollard, £7 7s 6d. Westport, Thursday. Unprecedented high floods occurred on Suuday, the rivers running level with the streets. The protection works stood well. No injury is done to the town, but the back country is flooded. The Mount Rochfort i Railway traffic was stopped for repairs, but is vow open again. The old bridge at Orawaiti was destroyed, and Serrins' Bridge Hotel was washed away. In many places wheeled traffic to Reefton is no longer possible. The County funds are totally inadequate to make the needful repairs. A man named Bell, employed by the Connty Council, was drowned on the Buller road during the flood on Sunday. He was washed from the roof of a hut, where he had taken shelter. The remains have since been found. Dunedin, Thursday. The Mayoral election to-day resulted in the return of Mr Leary by a majority of 362. The numbers were— Leary, 781, Woodlands, 419. The gross amount raised for the Indian Famine Fund is expected to reach £2500. The annual meeting of the Diocesan Synod was held yesterday, when Bishop •Neville delivered a long address. Several applications for assistant teachers and new schools came before the Education Board yesterday, but were deferred pending the passing of the Estimates. The question of the observance or nonobservance of fast days was discussed at the meeting of the Dunedin Presbytery yesterday. It transpired that opinions were divided, and that the practice of the church was at variance with what it was supposed to be. Balclwtha, Thursday. T\yelve coaches and forty horses were required to bring the passengers through from Clinton to Balclutha to-day. All were conveyed by Williams' line without a hitch.
