THE SALTWATER BATHS.

To the Editor of the « Evening Mail.' Sir -I fear it is almost too late, but I cannot refraiu from calling atteution to the. very grave error (as it appears to me) that has been made in the selection of a site for these baths. At a very short distance, and on the upper side of the stream when the tide is flowing, drains from three or four cottages conduct the slops and sewage into the sea, en route, as I fear it will prove, to the baths* not very many yards from the baths in the opposite direction, and on the upper side of the stream when the tide is ebbing, is the Commercial Wharf, where large steamers and other vessels are moored. Slush from the galley, the sweepings of the furnaces, and the drainings from the closets will be their contributions to the fenced-in water in which ifc is expected the citizens of Nelson wili disport themselves on snmmer mornings and evenings. lam not alone in believing that a mistake has been made, as I have heard several others make the same remark. If our fears are groundless it would be well that the City Surveyor should be askud to report to the Council in the matter, and to state that these contingencies had not escaped his notice, but had been carefully considered by him before finally deciding upon the site. It may be that lam mistaken with regard to the set of the currents, but, if not, it is very clear that the saltwater bathers of Neisou are to be asked to take their morniug swim in a cunningly devised filth trap. I am, &c , Eau de Cologne.
