LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Wellington, Thursday. In the Council to-day, Mr Holmes asked whether the Government has directed, or (if not) is prepared to direct, that New Zealand coal shall be used in the steamers and on the railways of the Government, and whether instructions had been given to adapt the furnaces of the new engines in process of construction for the use of New Zealand coal? Colonel Whifcmore replied that the Goernment had already taken action. Greymouth coal could be nsed by altering the furnaces. Mr Williamson asked whether any steps had been takeu towards getting the prohibition removed which now exists against the lauding of cattle and sheep in the Australian colonies from this colony? Colonel Whitmore replied thafc the Government siuce taking office had ordered letters to be written to the Governments of all the Australian colonies, urging *he desirability of the prohibition being removed.
