The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1877.
FiioM a telegram received from Wellington late last night we learn that Messrs Sharp and Curtis have declared against the present Government on the rather broad ground that they do not carry on the public business in a nianuer satisfactory to ' the country. The writer of a letter which appeared in our columns on Wednesday last stated that he was struck by the half heartedness and appareut want of earnestness which characterised Mr Curtis' speech on the Waka Maori question. This is not to be wondered at now that we know that while defending them on that one point Mr Curtis entertained a feeling of general dissatisfaction with Ministers. It is also said that Mr Ballance,
of Wanganui, has gono into opposition which does not surprise us after his speech in the Honae the other day in which the Government were coudemned in the most wholesale manner. These three members will not only reduce the majority lately obtained by the Government by their own' number, but will probably influence others, so that in the eventof a no-confidence motion being brought forward it is exceedingly likely that it wiil be carried. Who are to form a Ministry in which the country will have confidence is quite another question, and one that is not easily answered. The Rev. Father Garin notifies that he will deliver a lecture on tho Bible in St. Mary's Church on Sunday evening next. That he will handle his subject ably and in an earnest and interesting manner there can be no doubt. At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, John Jones was brought up charged with being a lunatic. ;He was remanded for further examination by Drs Sealy and Irvine. Two or three "drunks" were ordered to contribute the usual amount to the revenue. The Norraanby Hussars are requested to meet at the Forest Inn, Wakefield, to-morrow evening at seven o'clock in plain clothes A full muster is requested, as there is business of importance to be transacted. The barque Novelty is a full vessel, and. will commence discharging cargo at the Fire Brigade Hall, tho Port, this evening. The consignments are of a varied character, and bills of lading for them can ba purchased in the Hall. During the evening there will be vocal and instrumental music. The door will be open at seven o'clock, and one shilling is the price of admission. " The weak fat herbs," says the apostle, and without denying the efficacy of mineral medicines in certain cases, it may will be doubted whether those remedies which are derived from the vegetable kingdom are not the most efficacious as well as the safest. Certainly the astonishing cures of dyspepsia, kidntjy disease, rhtumatism, and of the numerous maladies in wbich tonic medication is serviceable, effected by Udopho Wolfk's Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps, whose constituents are vegetable, argue strongly in favor of botanic treatment — Advt.
