LOSS OF THE SHIP AVALANCHE.
NAMES OF THB OLD COLONISTS WHO WERE LOST. AGENT-GENERAL'S TELEGRAM. London', Sept. 12. The following colonists were lost iu the Avalanche: — For Wellington— Mrs and Miss Cooper; Cecil Walker; J. C. Cooper; Neil Pearce, eldest son of Edward Pearce. For Wanganui -Mr. Henry Wilkins and family ; Miss M. Watt ; Miss Taylor ; Mrs Shield ; Mrs Wychodsdil s J. M. Richards ; Miss Foote. London, Sept. 13 3.45 p.uv On Tuesday night the Avalanche, bound for Wellington, when off Portland was struck amidships by the American ship Forest, and sank in three minutes. There were sixty-three passengers, chiefly returning colonists, all of whom wero drowned. Of thirty-four seamen three were saved, including the third officer. Of the crew (21) of the Forest nine were saved. The bodies are being washed ashore. Among the list are whole families— eight Wilkius ; six Lees ; and four Chamberlains
