HEAVY LOSS ON BOTH SIDES.
The Agent-General's Telegram. London, Sept. 14. After four days cannonade, the Levuska redoubt before Plevna was taken by the Russians with heavy slaughter. Five thousand Russians were wounded. The number of killed is nofc estimated. Plevna is still held by the Turks. Suliemau Pasha is advancing oh Gabrova. The Czarewitch's army, has been driven back ou Biela by Mehemet Ali. The independence of Roumania has been proclaimed by Prince Charles, whose force, commanded by himself, behaved with great gallantry before Plevna. Forty of his officers aud privates were decorated by the Czar, who was present afc fche battle oa a platform. Nieksick has been taken by the Montenegrins with a battery of guns aud war material. On the Czar's birthday the Austrian Emperor drank the health of his dear friend the Czar. The Turks kill almost all their prisoners. ! The people iu the valley near Plevna are threshing their corn in the open air with I shells flying over their heads. [Bv Reuter's Submarine Cable.] Bombay, Sept. 12. The Emperor of Austria, at a bauquet, proposed the health of his dear' friend and ally, the Emperor of Uussia. Gambefcta has been sentenced to three months imprisonment and fined two thousand francs. Sept. 13. A Russian official despatch says the bombarding of Plevna continued unabated till the eveniug of .fche 10th. Tho Russians have captured another height commanding the town. The Russian cavalry defeated the Turkish cavalry ou the Sophia road. Plevna is closely invested. Turkish sorties repulsed. It is estimated thafc the Russian-Roumanian forces number 80,000 men, with 35G guns, aud the Turkish 60,000 men, 230 guns. A new bridge has beeu erected afc Nieonolis. l Gambetta appeals. Sept. 14. A Russian official despatch from headquarters afc Porodini says thafc a general assault on Plevna was made on the 11th, whet: there was desperate fighting. The Russiaus captured four redoubts. The Russian loss included two generals killed and one wounded. At daybreak on the 12th they occupied the conquered positions. London, Sept. 13. The St. Legcr was won by Silvio, Golightly 2, Manoeuvre, 3. The Australian and New Zealaud mails are delivered. [The following was published as au Extra on Saturday night.]
