Timaru, Wednesday. At the adjourned criminal sittings of the District Court to-day, Joseph Cockroft, jun., was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labor for fraudulent bankruptcy. Mr Haminersley, counsel -for tho accused moved for arrest of judgment on the ground that it was necessary to haye an attesting witness to a declaration of insolvency, but his Honor ruled against him. Wellington, Wednesday. The agent for the Transatlantic Insurance office says that -.1500 of the £3000 for which vtr Alcorn was insured in that office, was reinsured in English offices that have no agencies hero. According to the valuation of the stock made to-day by experts, it is estimated to have been worth between £9,000 and £10,000. During to-day £500 were subscribed amongst the mercantile community in a few hours for Mr Alcorn and family, and so keen was the sympathy that very much more could have been gathered if required. It is said that about two years ago Mr Alcorn came here with five or six thousand pounds, and by this fire he loses every shilling. The cash on the premises amounted to about £18*>, of which £ 4 has been found among the ruins. Lord and Lady Normanby have sent a letter of sympathy to Mr aad Mrs . Alcorn. At the inquest on the child, the jury returned a verdict of accidental death. Thursday. The outward San Francisco mail will leave all the ports of the colony one day later than originally fixed. Tho Rotorna will leave Wellington on Sunday instead of Saturday. Auckland, Wednesday. Arrived— Rotorua,. from Sydney, at 5-30 p.m. She brings 32 passengers. Arrived— lsland Lily, from the Chathams. She reports that 3i>B bales of wool had been lately washed ashore from the ship Ocean Mail, which has gone to pieces. The barque Spirit of Dawn got away today. Her cargo is valued at £5_,<)00.f Port Chalmers, Wednesday. Arrived— Martin Scott, 94 days out from London. She brings 940 tons of cargo and 18 passengers, and had exceptionally fine weather across the Southern Ocean. Oamaru, Thursday. A meeting was held last night to consider the formation of a laige company, for exporting Oamaru building stone to the principal cities of the Australian colonies. ft_n influential committee was appointed to collect data and report upon the best means of carrying out the object in view.
