[press agenct.] Christchbrch, Wednesday. Applications for shares in the Union Insurance Company have been immense this week. The unemployed agitation is now over, 150 men having been taken on by the various Road Boards. Work has been offered to others at five shillings per day, but many refused it as being too low. The land sales yesterday realised £28,674. Auckland, Wednesday. The yacht Blanche has arrived from the Islauds.^and is therefore not the vessel supposed to be wrecked at the North Cape. The Dunedin football team were driven into town in a brake. A strong team wUI oppose them. The man Durham, who sent a letter to his wife threatening suicide, has been discovered all right. The Licensed Victuallers have passed the following resolution :— « That this meeting protests against the passing of the Local Option Bill, it being tyrannous, obnoxious, and contrary to the principles of free trade - and that the thanks of the Association are due to Dr. Wallis for his independent action m endeavoring to do justice to both Licensed Victuallers and Good Templars." The topsail schooner Hinemoa, which left Buckland for Samoa, is missing, and it is feared she is wrecked. The hull is insured in the New Zealand for £1200, and the cargo in the Victoria for £500 and Batavia £suo The vessel is owned by Ross, D. H. Mackenzie, and Captain Fairchild, and under the command of Captain Ross. The Trade and Labor Council have adopted a petition to Parliament stating that many good mechanics are leaving the colony through want of employment; that materials for railways should be manufactured here whenever practicable. Samoa news states that the rumored annexation to the United States is untrue. The natives are fighting. Business is stagnant. Dunedin, Wednesday. An important decision affecting the Licensed Victuallers, was delivered by Mr Justice Williams to-day. The case was an appeal by Mr Dobson from the decision of the Justices, which was taken up by the Licensed Victuallers Association, as to the right to sell liquor to travellers or lodgers on Sundays, and for that purpose to keep open the side door of public-houses on the Sabbath. His Honor decided on both points in favor of the publican, and has mulcted the information in costs. Thursday. A well attended meeting of those engaged in the liquor traffic was held to discuss the Local Option Bill. Several resolutions were carried strongly ppposed to the measure, which was characterised as unjust, unfair, aud tyrannical. The resolutions are to be forwarded to the members of the House of liepresentatives. Captain Griffiths, late commander of the steamer Taranaki, died here last night after a short illness. TauPwANGa, Thursday. Over two thousand shares in the Union Fire and Marine Insurance Company hsve been applied for here.
