Times' staff respecting the contemplated visit of an Australian team tb New Zealand, says : " You may calculate that we shall be in New Zealand, if the negotiations end successfully, early in January. • The Australian team will, you may rest assured, make heaps of friends in your colony by their good behaviour and good cricket playing. The matter is all in snaps now, aud nothing remains but to get leave of absence for three of the team for twelve months. I -expect that articles will be signed in the course of a week, aud then I will send you ■the". names of the full team. The, twelve, you may state, will be chosen from the following :— Bannerman, Blackham, Gregory, Allan N. Thompson, I venn all, Hor an, Boyle, Sleight, Garrett, Murdock, Kelly, Spofforth, Campbell, and G. H. Bailey (Tasmania). You can imagine what a team can be selected from the above." It has not yet been decided whether the start will be made from Sydney or Melbourne. Hokitika, Saturday. A fire occured this morning in a house in Revell-street belonging to a blacksmith named Andrews. The mother and two children were severely burned, and oue child has since died. The house, which was not insured, was completely destroyed. Sunday. Mr Andrews' second boy, who was burned at the fire yesterday morning has also died. The family consisting of five children. Both parents were ill, sleeping in one room. All were more or less burned, and the mother is not yet out of danger. The two boys burned to death were aged seven and five years ; the girls saved were aged ten and three years, with an infant four months old. Every stitch of clothing was burned ofiE all seven. The delay in opening the door was occasioned by the handle &eiug off. The eldest j girl had the presence of mind to get under the bed with her sister, and thus escaped the flames for a few minutes: Christchurch, Saturday. The entry of Mr Logan's Cloth o£ Gold for the Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap, which by an alleged oversight on the part of the Telegraph Department did ..-not reach Christchurch in time, has been accepted by the Jockey Club. ' " T Monday. Ihe railway receipts for June were £22,309, being £7,200 less than for April. Jas. Smith, for many years chief clerk at Cobb and Co.'s office, was found in the river this morning. It is supposed that he committed suicide. ' At a meeting of the operative bootmakers union it was announced that the hands employed at Tommer's large factory had signified their intention of joining,but subsequently finding that the Tommer and Son disapproved of it they withdrew. This action was warmly criticised aud condemned bv the meeting, and it was proposed to make a break up of the union, but this was negatived by 22 to 6. It was resolved no take measures to induce the bootmakers from elsewhere not to come to Christchurch for wcrk. Dunedin, Saturday. Mr Meares, of the Victoria Insurance ofl.ce, Dunedin, has been appointed manager of the new Union Insurance Company ,__ A petition is about to be circulated re the railway question. The recent reduction of rates on the Dunedin and Port Chalmers line still leaves the rates eightpence per tou higher than those charged by lighters. Greymouth, Monday. The Coal Company reached the sixteen feet seam m their shaft on Saturday night. The coal is hard aud of excellent quality.
