[PRESS AGENCr.] Wellington, Monday. The Australia, with the London maih of the 26th of June, sailed from San Francisco for Auckland on the 16fch of July, contract date. The City of New York, with the New Zealand mails, leaving Auckland on the 14th instant, arrived at San Francisco on the 26th instant. Napier, Monday. The weather is very stormy today,aud was so yesterday. There is a terrific sea, and the Rotorua with the mails tried to get in this morning, but was obliged to put to aea again. Wkstpoht, Sunday. Ellen Wan was committed to gaol last night under coroner's warrant for tho manslaughter of her infant child, eleven months old, through neglect and ill-treatment. New Plymouth, Monday. The body of Newlegin has been found in Waitara River, just above the bridge. An inquest is now being held. Pout Chalmers, Saturday. A hole was pierced through Deborah Bay tunnel at 4 p.m. to-day. | Dunbdin, Saturday. A donation ot £50 has been forwarded to the Dunediu Hospital by the mother of a young Englishman who died in it in 1875. Mr Bastings was re-elected Chairman of | the Tuapeka County Council. He will not , accept a salary. A meeting was held last evening, at which there was a large attendance of delegates from the workshops and factories. The feeling generally expressed was that a demonstration of all trades should be held to support those members of the House who have taken up the matter of Government importation of manufactured material. Resolutions were passed unanimously fixed on Saturday evening, the 4th of August, for the meeting ; and the movement will take the form of trade procession, which will meet at Fire Brigade depot, and march through town to the place of meeting, which will probably be held in the open air if the weather is fine ; if not, the meeting will be adjourned to one of the public halls. The meeting was most unanimous and enthusiastic ; and the feeling was expressed that all trades should take part in ifc. A good working committee was formed. Christchuech, Monday. Messrs Lightband, Allaa & Co., large manufacturers of boots by machinery, have closed their establishment for a fortnight, preparatory to reducing the scale of wages. Sixty employees are thus thrown out of work, and they have telegraphed to the Associations in other parts of the colony and Australia to support them in resisting the reduction. Several butchers were fined at the R. M. Court this morning for having light weights in their possession.
