CITY COUNCIL.
, The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last night. Present, all the members but Cr Levien. A letter was read from the Mayor to the Under-Secretary, asking when it was likely the Port extension of the railway would be commenced. No reply had been received. ! A letter was received from the Town Clerk of Christchurch, stating that the conference of delegates from the municipal bodies would be held at Wellington on the lat of August. After some discussion ifc was decided that the Nelson delegate should be supplied in writing with any suggestions the Councillors decidsd to make. A letter was received from Mr J. P. Black complaining of the disgraceful Btate of Kawai-street, and stating that it had only been kept in a passable condition at his expense, although he had paid £150 in rates. He thought that at least two-thirds of the rates should be expended in the locality in which they were raised. Referred to the Public Works Committee. Cr T. Harley presented a petition, signed by the ratepayers in the locality praying that a culvert might be substituted for the open ditch in Selwyn place. The petition was ordered to lie on the table. A letter from the Under Secretary, with reference to the maintenance of public pounds, was read. : The report bf the Public Works Committee was read. It stated that they did not feel justified, in recommending so large an expebditure as would be necessary to form Mount-street. With reference to the mill lead in Alton-street, it recommended that six montbs' notice be given to Mr Campbell requiring him to substitute proper pipes' for the present race The Committee recommended that horses and carts be furnished by the Council for extending the approaches to the Bridge-street bridge, the Government to find prison labor. The report was agreed to with the exception of the clause relating to the mill lead, wbich was referred back to the Committee for further consideration. The following tenders were opened —For formation of Halifax-street, It. Carter £133 R.Grant £178; For making up Trafalearstreet north, R. Carter £145 • For wideningroad from Messas Davis and Go's bonded store to Saltwater Bridge, R. Carter £105 • Merrick and Gordon £118 ; Stevens and Co £128 10s. The tender of R. Carter in each case was accepted. In reply to Cr Pickering, the Mayor stated that he had heard nothing more from the Government relative to the saltwater baths."* Cr Pickering called attention to the* dangerous state of the footpath near Oiaremont House. Cr Gray moved that the levelling of Waimea-street near Mrs Snow's be proceeded with. This was opposed by Cr T. Harley and eventually referred to the Public Works' Committee. The Council then adjourned.
