•Was it really ?— We should like to know m what way we have offended the Press Agency that they should put us to the cost of paying for such rubbish as the following telegram ?— « A special wire was laid on to the New Zealand Times office, and Mr Stafford's speech was taken off in the editor's room last night." Does anybody outside the limes office care how it got its report of the speech ? A meeting, of tho Town Local Committee was held yesterday afternoon, when Miss F. Burns was elected out of five applicants to the post of assistant teacher at the Hardystreet Preparatory School. Residents in Motueka arid Riwaka will be glad to learn that the Government dre calling for tenders for the erection, of thVlong-talked-of bridge. Archdeacon Thorpe arrived by the, Taranaki last night, and received a nearty .welcome from a large number of his *. friends who. were assembled oa the wharf to meet him. We are glad to learn that his health has been greatiy benefitted by his trip to England. ryA: ; TE£.EQKit ii appears elsewhere with reference to the capture of Ardahan by the Russians. It imist be borne in mind "that this is not a late event, but that the message •.qierely contains fuller details" of tto storming of Ardahan, of wh*ch we .were informed by cable six : weeks ago! The Temperance Conference has. held several meetidg^ of; lata; iv .Welfia^ton, various and diverse opiniors have been expressed with regard to the best mode of suppressing intemperance^ and ultimately, . by. a doubtful majority, there J.emg some, dispute whether , the greater numbers 1 of hands was held up for pr; against .the resolutions,* it was resolved :-" Tbat a Committee be appointed - -fr^Y, W F<\ikW , fc H • -Parliament , racom- - wending' the gedebl principled of the Local Option Bill," upon which . the Rev. Mr Patterson, who had displayed considerable : interest and taken a. prominent part ia the proceedings, expres'scM his' 'opinion 'tnait "the whole thing had ended in smoke." Mr Hutcheson, the Mayor, appears -to-* have been the only one who made any really practical suggestion, although the amount of talk at the various meetings was immense. . He contended that the number -of licenses should be restricted in! proportion to the population. "At present, in Wellington." ,(he said) f'with a population of about 20,00 •, there were only four or five butchers, and fourteen bakers to supply the solid food, but no fewer than forty-four publicans to supply liquids. This was equal to a publichouse to every 120 males above eighteen years old. One ncr 1 000 would be ample." c An interesting .account of the review by the Czar of the Russian troops at Kiscbeneff immediately prior to. the declaration of war' will be ; found in the fourth page of to-day's issue. J W_3.publish to-day a telegraphic report of the speech delivered by Mr Stafford to his constituents at Timaru. Whether it was that he did not intend to say anything, or that what he did say has been spoilt by summarising, we know not, but, from whatever cause it may have arisen, tbe speech as we have received it is certainly one of the most vacuous and uninteresting it haa beeu our lot to peruse since the close of the session. Lieut. Paynter, the champion shot of New Zealand, having received a challenge from Mr b. AMeeting of the Loyal Howard Lodge of Oddfellows was held last nigbt when it was shown by the Treasurer's statement that the lodge funds at present amount to £2970, while the number of members on the roll is 162. The _f aranaki Herald understands that Mr Artb i ji- Harley has sold his property known as Timaru Farm, near Oakura, for £2500. A case of a peculiar character that came .before the District Court at Timaru is thus noticed in the Herald of the 4th instant :— Oi the list of bankruptcy cases set down for disposal at the District Court yesterday moraing was one in which Thomas Hudson made application for an order of discharge. On the case being called, Mr Hammersley, who appeared in support of the application, stated that Hudson had died suddenly the previous night, but asked for an order to be made, so as to clear the estate. Hia Honor said it was out of h_3 power to grant an order in. favor of a dead man. Hudson had beeu present in the Court the whole of tbe previous day, thinkiug his case would come on theu. He has, however, got released from his debts in a manner he little expected. Hudson was well known in Timaru, haying b.en for some time engaged in tbe butchering business.' Queer feelings. Odd sensations in various parts of the body particularly ih' the lower extremities, which *,do not amount to ?. ctual pain, but are, upon the whole, rather worse, trouble many persons. Almost invariably theproceed from nervousness and weakness. A few doses of that peerless nervine aud iuvigorant, Udolpho Wolfe's Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps invariably dispel all such queer feelings and establish pefect bodily comfort and tranquility.-— Advt.
