Auckland, Monday. There were several alarms of fire on Saturday night, but nothing serious occurred. Football matches are lacking in spirit, owing to the late fatal accident. Christchurch, Monday. At a meeting of the Drainage Board to-day a letter was read from Mr Carruthers, resigning the appointment of consulting Engineer. The consideration of the letter was postponed. It is rumored that a new morning paper is to be started afc Timaru. At tbe Magistrate's Oourfc to-day, W. 11. Capons, the boy arrested for endeavoring to pass buttons for sovereigns, was committed to the Industrial School for. eighteen months. A youth named Rees, charged with a similar offence, was committed for trial. Thomas H.Fielding, formerly editor of the Licensed Victuallers Gazette, was brought up here to-day, charged under the name of Hiram Walter Patterson, with having embezzled moneys belonging to the Darebin Town Council, Victoria, in the year 1873. Inspector Buckley said the total amount embezzled was about .£6OO. The prisoner was remanded till July 2-ith. Tuesday. The calendar for the Supreme Court at the criminal sessions commencing on Monday is unusually light. A private letter from the West Coast says tha, over 1000, feet of tunnelling has been completed in the. Rangitotb silver mine. Specimens of Canterbury marble which were sent to England have been very favorably reported on. * Westport, Tuesday. The road is now open for traffic- from Westpdrt to Reefton, and a. four-horse mail coach started on its first trip .this morning, and will run through in a day twice weekly. Dunedin, Monday. It has been determired to keep the lists for the Macandrew Testimonial Fund open for a few days longer, and it is understood that the presentation will be on the eve of his departure for Wellington to attend the next session of Parliament. A public meeting to consider the railway question will be held early next week. Tuesday. Steps are being taken by the Directors of the Peninsula and Ocean Beach Railway Company aud the settlers to extend the railway to Portobello. The cost will be about £40,000. The Harbor Board this morning resolved nofc! to adopt the recommendation of the Government to place the- docks bn the site originally fixed upon, and agreed to the plan submitted by Mr Walters.
