GOAT NUISANCE.
To the Editor of the 'Evening Mail. Sir— lt is gratifying to find that at length steps are being taken to abate a very serious nuisance, and one which through neglect has been allowed to grow until it has become unendurable, and gardens and orchards have in many cases been utterly destroyed, 'and the growth and work of years thrown away. Those who have been sufferers, by the depredations of goats know too well the irreparable injury they inflict upon orchards and plantations by barking and nibbling the trees, and to the gardener there cannot be a greater pest. In Auckland the goat nuisance gave the authorities much trouble, and in the end it was found necessary to levy % tax of £1 or £2 per head, I believe, upon every goat kept within the town boundary, and that put an end to it.. A similar tax might be levied with advantage here, and then only goats of value to the. owner would be kept, and on his own premises, and not b£ allowed to damage the property of his neighbors with impunity. — I am, &c, Citizen. Nelson, June 21, 1877.
