CITY COUNCIL.
The ordinary, fortnightly meeting was held last night.T Present, all the members except Cra Waters! and Pickering. ' • The following letters were received:— From Mr Meld,, reiterating _H complaint concerning the gorse, and expressing a dread, that some night he would be burnt to death in his bed. The Town Clerk was instructed to see the agents for the adjoining properties, and make arrangements with them for the eradication of the nuisance vfrom Mr J. P. Miller, /asking for a lease of land on the banks of the Maitai, near Nile-street, for the erection of a grain mill. Referred to the Public Works Committee; from Mr R. Burn, complaining, of the state of Grove-street, and suggesting the erection of a gas lamp afc Collingwood Biidge ; from Mr Scaife, on behalf of the Insurance Companies, com* plaining of a. breach of the "Dangerous Goods Act ""by merchants and others in Nelson. Referred to the Bye Laws Committee; from Mr White, calling attention to the atate of the footpath in Collingwoodstreet south. Referred to the City Surveyor. ; Iv reply to a letter from the Town Clerk of Christchurch, suggesting that a conference of delegates from the various municipal bodies bg held in Wellington for the purpose of arranging with the government with regard to the deduction from subsidies for charitable aid, it was rasolved on the motion of Cr Webb, seconded by Cr J. A. Harley, that a delegate be sent f rom Nelson. Ifc was resolved on the motion of Cr Hooper that Mx Groom be offered 2s per load for the stone removed from his property. The report of the Public Works Committee was read, which recommended, among other things, that -the residence of the Manager at the Gasworks be compulsory, and that his salary be £3 10s per week with house, gas, and. water free of charge. . The City Surveyor's report! on the Gasworks spoke very favorably of the goods recently, obtained through Messrs N. Edwards and Co, which were reported to be o2 better quality and cheaper thau could be obtained in Melbourne or Dunedin. A contract for the removal of earth which \had slipped behind the retort house had been lefc to Messrs Jones and Wise for £10. The | quantity of coal carbonised during the month [ of May was eighty tons, and the yield of gas -549,130 feet, of which 66,570 feet had been lost by leakage, &c. It was resolved that twenty tons of Grey coal be obtained at once. On the motion of Cr J. A. Harley, seconded by the Mayor, it was resolved that a subsidy ! of £25 be voted to the Fire Brigade, regret | being expressed that the amount could not be larger. On the motion of Cr Grey, it was resolved that Mr Lightfoot be requested to make an immediate inspection of the hackney'car- ! riages, I Certain accounts were passed, including £41 7s for Mr George's attendance and expenses for nine days, and the Council adjourned. -' ' '■****
