The Secretary of the Nelson Football Club has received a letter from the Ounedin Secretary suggesting that during the month of August a series of games should be played in heats by the Auckland, Wellington, Nelson, and Dunedin Football Clubs in Wellington. It is thought that such a tournament would create * great deal of interest. We have received the June number of the Church Mesienger, which contains the usual amount of diocesan church news, the sermon preached by the Bishop of Nelson at the time of the session of the University Senate in Nelson, and a deal of other interesting information. The Good Templars of Nelson purpose giving a dramatic entertainment on the Bth instant, founded upon George Cruickshank's striking illustrations published under the title " The Bottle," in which is graphically depicted the downward progress of the drunkard from the day on which he firifc admits the bottle into his bouse to his ultimate disgrace and ruin. The receipts will be devoted to the organ fund. The piece is being carefully got up, and there ia little doubt that it will prove a success, dramatically and financially. An English paper says:— "A man whose name is scarcely known, but who has been the means of making much noise in the world, is dead. Adiiin Stevens the inventor of the steam whistle, died on Christmas Day at his residence at Merthyr Tydvil, at the age of eighty-one.
