CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting was held last night. Present, all the members but Crs J. aud T. Harley. Letters were read as follows:— From Mr Jessop, calling attention to the state of the ditches in Washington Valley, from Mr Ingham, asking why Murphy and Tekuka street . had not been thrown open by Mr Orsman; from Mr Browning, complaining of the gorse in the streets and properties in the neighborhood of his house; from Mr Groom, complaining that flagstones were being removed from his property, and stating that he should expect 5 s per load for all that had been taken away. The Surveyor sta'ed that the stone had been procured from the middle f the river bed. Mr George's report on the gasworks, which was^f considerable length, was read. The works were reported to be in good order, and he spoke in complimentary terms of the

Teat meters were recommended with a view to ascertaining where the fault lay. The cost of making gaa he found to be 9s 2d per 1000 feet, but he considered that the coal used was of an inferior character. TEe report of the Public Works Committee was then read, and the following recommendations were adopted:— That tenders should be invited for the supply of about 70 tous of Grey coal; that tbe Council purchase from Mr Carter tbe stone broken by him in excess of bis contract at 7s per yard; that two men be permanently employed in clearing gorse from the streets; that notice be given to carters warning them against removing gravel from the river beds without the consent of the Council; that the extension of the gas service at the port be left to the Committee to deal with. A Committee of the following Councillors to enquire into and revise the bye laws was appointed:— The Mayor, Crs Hooper, Levien, Pickering, and Webb. The Council then adjourned.
