Information was conveyed to the police this afternoon that a robbery of clothes had occurred on board the steamer Maori last night, and had been traced to William Burns, who was brought before the Magistrate on Saturday, and discharged with a caution. The steward and a seaman of the Maori, from whom the clothing had been stolen, went on board the Ocean Bird from information they had received, where they found Burns, who restored the clothes and then bolted, and they then laid the information. The police were at once despatched in various directions, and eventually the man was aerested at the Globe Hotel, and brought before Mr A. Mackay, who sentenced him to three months' imprisonment. An Assembly will be held in the Oddfellows' Hall to-morrow evening, dancing to commence at eight o'clock. Mr Severn delivered the last of his series of lectures to a large audience in the Provincial Hall last night. At its close he stated that he was desirous of thanking the people of Nelson for the very kind manner in which he had been received, and for the interest Jthey had displayed in the subjects introduced to their notice. He had delivered thirteen lectures here, a larger number than he had given in any other district in New Zealand, and he trusted that to any other scientific lecturer who might visit Nelson a similar reception would be accorded. What appears to have been a determined, although very badly arranged, attempt to burn down a house was discovered on Monday night; The buildiDg was an unoccupied one belonging to Mrs Warnock, in Colling-wood-street south, and in one of the rooms had been placed a box, in the bottom of which were chips, shavings, and a a well greased ball of canvas, the box being filled with small pieces of firewood. A light had been set to this, and the consequence wa3 that a quantity of smoke was pouring forth through some crevices in the roof. This was noticed by Mr A. Parmenter, wha entered the building through the back door, that had been left unlocked, and by the'application of two or three buckets of water extinguished the flames. The following just received from Wellington will, we fear, prove otherwise than a a source of satisfaction to those interested in to-morrow's races: — Captain Edwin reports: —Watch barometer, bad wather approaching, indications of winds from any direction between norte-east and north by west, and further fall of glass. It is generally allowed that good old pure, unadulterated whisky is as wholesome a spirit as any manufactured, and the best sample of Mitchell's Al Old Irish Whisky can be had from the agents, E.Buxton If you are a business or professional man. you need to keep your mental faculties in first-class working order. This is most effectually done by keeping the nerves calm and the digestion unimpaired. The experience of lawyers, authors clergymen and physicians has sho.vn that when the nerves and brain are overstrained by intense mental exertion, or the stomach weakened by too constantly maintaining a sitting posture, the most certain means of counteracting these effects is Udolpho Wolfe's Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps.— Advt
