The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, MAY 14, 1877.

We learn from the Tadmor that mining matters are progressing satisfactorily, although not on a large scale. There are now about 120 men on the field, most, if not ali, of whom are making good wages. The bad weather last week putting a stop to digging the miners set to work to erect log huts and make themselves snug for the winter, and the flat is now dotted over with a number of these temporary residences. There still continue to be a few arrivals on the field, while none have lately left, a pretty sure proof that all must be doing well. Mr Severn delivered the last of his series of lectures on Saturday night when notwithstanding the unfavorable weather there was a good attendance. The "Solar system" was the subject, and the lecture was made additionally interesting by the large number of diagrams and photographs by which it was illustrated. The course of lectures for which the College Governors have arranged will commence this evening and will continue throughout the week. Those on Tuesday and Thursday will be delivered in the afternoon, the Hall being otherwise engaged daring the evenings. A meeting of those Avho are desirous of seeing races in Nelson this year will be held at the Nelson Hotel this evening, when the advisability of holding a meeting on the Queen's Birthday will be discussed. We understand that Mr Canning has offered for the purpose a paddock on what is known as Disher's Farm, about two miles beyond Richmond. The Wesleyan Sunday School teachers' tea meeting will take place this evening at 6*30 o'clock. At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning Joseph Aufcy Harley was charged that "at a meeting jof the City Council he, being a Councillor of the City, did use offensive language, and having been twice called to order refused to sit down." Mr Acton Adams for the Mayor and Corporation said that he had beeu requested to ask leave to withdraw the information, the defendant having written an apology to the Mayor, which he then read. The Resident Magistrate said that such being the case the proceedings of course were afc an end, but he must observe thafc had the prosecution been gone on wifch he could not have convicted the defendant, as by fche wording of the information he was charged with an offence not known to fche law, the bye law stating that a Councillor who having misconducted himself refused to " withdraw or apologise " should be deemed guilty of an offence, nothing being said about his refusing "to sit down." The Harmonic Society's quarterly concert to be given on Thursday next promises to be one of the most successful yet given. It will consist of selections from the favorite Opera of Maritana including many of the most popular solos? 1 duetts, trios, and quarters. The choruses have always gone with great spirit at the practices, and will no doubt be fully appreciated by the audience. Why will people dose themselves with terrible alkaloids like Quinine, which is a most dangerous drug, and afc the best affords only a respite in cases of Chills and Fever when there is a harmless, effectual and' speedy remedy which totally eradicates any complaint of an intermittent or remittent character. And why do they not anticipate such diseases by protecting themselves against the affects of malarial poison with such an antidote and preventive as Unonrao Wolvk's Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps — Advt
