AUSTRALIAN SUMMARY.
[Per Wakatipu. J Sir William Jervois is inspecting the Sydney fortifications. The Sydney Herald has an article on Capt. Walker's paper on State Forestry, _and considers that the State is the proper administrator of the national forests. Bailey's American circus and menagerie will not visit New Zealand. The latter will remain at Sydney. Bailey purposes returning .with large additions to the auimals from India aud elsewhere. The question of the payment of members is to be brought before the Victorian Parliament. Sir J. McCulloch and Mr Service are strongly opposed to the payment, and trust the next session will see the end of the experiment. The nominations for the Assembly took place on the Sth instant throughout Victoria. There are 200 candidates for the 84 seats. Seventy-two old members aro seeking re-election. It is understood that a match has been arranged between Trickett and Rush for*the sculling championship of the world. It is rumored that Mr Weld will appointed Governor of South Australia. " Captain Press, of the barque Fredericka, has been presented by the Chairman of the Sugar Company with a gold watch in recognition of his services in bringing his vessel in a disabled state from Java to Melbourne. Sir John O'Shannessy is strongly advocating free trade. Dr. Schomburg, of Adelaide, has received a sample of wheat from the Arctic regions. A sixty-ounce nugget has been found at Port Darwin. The news from tne diggings continues favorable. Another case of small pox has occurred at Adelaide on board the British ship Enterprise. Typhoid fever is rather prevalent in Melbourne. Adelaide. The Government are calling for volunteers for the defence of the colony. -j
