Dr Skae's report on the Lunatic Asylum is very unfavorable, and shows that whereas the building was erected for fifty patients, one hundred and sixty-five are crammed into .it, the patients sleeping in corridors, on the top of stairs, and in every available space. He compares the asylum management unfavorably that of Christchurch and -Hokitika, but says that considering the many "difficulties, the rate of mortality is low, and the cures high.
