At 5 a.m., having run direct by patent log, she was steered towards the shore, but the weather was very thick, and oniy the hills close to the water could be seen. Shortlyafter breakers were seen on the starboard bow, and the steamer went astern, and struck once on Shag Reef. Wellington, Friday. The Government steamer Luna has been sold (though rot yet taken over) to the Brunner Coal Mining Company, for £4000. One thousand shares in the new Brunner Coal Mining Company have been all allotted to Wellington, which is to be the depot of the Company; 1800 are for Greyraouth, 1000 for Dunedin, and 500 for Christchurch. At the opening of the annual session of the Philosophical Institute, Dr Haast, in his presidential address, gave an account of the discovery of remarkable ancient rock paintings in Weka Pass Ranges. He exhibited caraf ul drawings of them by Mr S. S. Cousins, Someof the rock paintings are sft long, and represent animals of foreign countries, weapons, and dresses of semi-civilised p'eople. Letitia Reid, for burglary, was sentenced to nine months. Bernard Grey, for ste ,lin<? a valuable receipt, was sentenced to five years' penal servitude. Auckland, Friday. Dr. Lee will not stand for City West, A farewell service to the Bishop of Melanesia took place to-day. The subscriptions to the All-England cricket fund amounted to £170' 1 6s 6d, and the expenses to £210 3s; £100 was paid to the Auckland Racing Club for the use of the ground. Connell, charged with stealing from the A.C. at Ttmpo, was acquitted. Jamieson and Gray, for larceny, were acquitted. Boyle, for arson, was also acquitted. , . Aeturi and Akia (natives), charged with horse-stealing and burglary, were sentenced; to eighteen months and two years respectively. Kaitangata, Friday. An inquest was held to-day into the origin of the fire on the offices of Reginald MacDonald, storedeeper and timber merchant, on the morning of the 4th. The jury returned a verdict of " Maliciously set fire to, but no evidence to show by whom." Besides the premises destroyed, a timber. store arid a produce store had been set on fire by means of Hobarton splits and a bag saturated with turpentine, but this was discovered and cxtiuguished before any damage ebuld be done. Two detectives have been engaged investigating the matter for several days. The premises and stock burned were fully insured, Onehukga, Friday.
