VOLUNTEER ENCAMPMENT.

Saturday afternoon was devoted to sports and horse racing for small ptizes. There was a large attendance of the public, and the competition was in many cases very close. The following is a list of the events and the names of the winners: — Cadet Race, 100 yards; first orizo 15s, second ss— Askew 1, M'Kellar* 2. Six entered. Handicap Race, 100 yards; first prize £1, second 10s. For Volunteers in uniform and carrying arms.— Askew (College Cadets) 1, Fathers (Naval Brigade) 2. Nine entries. Flat Bace for Cavalry: For horses the property of owners in the troop. Prize, £5; one mile. Trooper Ricketts' Tommy Dodd, 1; Trooper Primmer's Fishhook, 2. Two others started, the race being a close one between the two leading horses. Flat Eace, open to all comers; riders to be Volunteers iu uniform. One mile. Prize, £3.— Mr Gapper's Day Dawn (Sergt C. Bird) 1; Mr Thompson's Little Dick (Sergt Lock) 2. Two others started, the rider of one horse named Gollop getting a tumble, which shook him pretty severely. Flat Kace, 200 yards. Open to all coiners.! Prize £l.—Barnicoat (College Cadets) 1, Hunt (Hussars) 2, Akersten (City Kifles) 3. Hurdle Kace, 100"yards. For Volunteers in uniform only. Prize £ I.— Fathers (Naval Brigade) 1, Hodgson - (College' Cadets) 2, Harkness (Hussars) 3. : Extra Race, 100 yards. For the Artillery,' with linibers. Won by No. 2 Limber; Sergt. C. Bird, Gunners Jennings, B. Jackson, Nippert, and More. This, which was an interesting and wellcontested race, brought the sports to a close, and the Volunteers returned to camp and the publio li. their. homes. Yesterday divine service was held by the Bishop of Nelson, the Band taking theplace of the organ, and during the afternoon there were several visitors to the camp, all of whom were most hospitably received. This afternoon the force will be reviewed at three o'clock by the Hon. Major Richmond, C.8., and in the evening the Volunteers will return to town, accompanied by the Fire Brigades, who will form a torchlight procession.
