The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, APRIL 2, 1877.
We are frequently hearing complaints that facilities for acquiring information regarding the movements cf steamers are not afforded at the new as they were at the old Telegraph Office, where the board was kept posted in such a place that it couid be seen at all times, whereas at presenfc it is only visible during office hours. We feel sure that it is only necessary to mention the matter to ensure its being attended to, as the local manager has always proved himself willing to consult the convenience of the public. Captain Petherbridge, who for some years past has been the general manager for Messrs Shaw, Saville, and Co. in this colony, passed through Nelson to-day in the Taupo on his way to Auckland, whence he will proceed to England by the next San Francisco mail steamer. The season for pheasant aud quail shooting i3. we understand, to commence on the 24th of May, and close on the 31st of July. His Excellency the Governor is so pleased with the sport he obtained here on previous occasions, that it is his intention to pay another visit to Nelson this winter, and he will probably come across in H.M.S. Wolverine, which is expected to arrive in the colony shortly. The congregations at the various churches yesterday were unusually large, and the usual Easter services were held. At All Saints the chancel and font were most tastefully decorated. In the latter was an elegant bouquet of ferns and flowers, rising from which was a cross composed of white cotton wool, twined with lycopodium, and wreathed with scarlet geraniums. At the foot of the choir stalls were baskets of fruits and flowers, the latter including some most beautiful roses, the altar rails Avere wreathed with lycopodium, on the altar was a bouquet of roses, and on the eastern wall, iu scarlet flowers and berries were the words "He is risen " on a ground' of white wool. Above this again, in letters of flowers and leaves was the text, " Christ, our passover, is sacrificed for us." The' decorations were not profuse bufc produced a most pleasing effect, being artistically designed and tastefully executed. Of the hop market our latest Melbourne advices state -.—Hops are in fair request. Sales of Tasmanian (new crop) have been made at 2s Id to 2s 2d for Shoobridge's Kent hops are rather slow; good samples are' quoted at 2s and 2s 3d. Bavarian, 1875, are nominal at 2s.
