Christchurch, Thursday. In _the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, the civil case, Donkin v. Pooley (the English cricketer) and Bramhall, for £98 damages for destruction of clothing and plans by defendants, was adjourned at the request of the counsel for the defence to enable an important witness to arrive from Melbourne. It is said that the witness can prove that it was not Pooley and Bramhall who destroyed the plans and clothiug. The Times this morning alleges that an M.H.R. who recently joined the commercial profession is travelling on the railways free ih his business capacity bj means of a free pass which he holds as a Member of the Assembly, He is not a Canterbury man. The land sales for January amounted to £50,000, for February to £48,000, and for March to date to £63,000. Timaru, Thursday. The Temuka and Geraldine show yesterday was a failure owing to everybody being busy with harvest. j The meat preserving company offer an advancer of one shilling per head for sheep owing to the increased-value of meats in the London market. A. An Artesian well has been successfully bored at the swimming baths, and it is hoped that a practical supply for the town may thus be procured. Dunedin, Thursday. Christina Clark was tried at Lawrence yesterday for the wilful murder of her child. The verdict was Not Guilty. Mr Mansford, R.M., gave his judgment this morning re Pearson v. the Fever Hospital. He held that the defendant was guilty of neglect in not providing sufficient nurses, and awarded plaintiff nominal damages. . Grahamstown, Thursday. Moanatiri shares went up 'to £16 last night, and to-day they reached £21. A large yield is looked for from the current fortJ night's crushing. About a ton of specimen stone was broken down this week, enough to keep a single stamper going. It is said the show of gold is equal to the best show ever seen in the Calidonian. t Hokitika, Thursday. The Counties Act has-been brought into full operation. Salaries are voted to the Chairman and Clerk of £200 per aunum each.
