GENERAL SYNOD.

The Synod- met yesterday evening, and. ' after the transaction of some business, the j Re*.. Mr Selwyn, the Bishop elect of Melan- j esia, who had just arrived in the steamer i Hawea, took his seat, and thanked the V Synod for the distinction conferred upon him by his election to an office of such deep importance, at the same time expressing. his sense of his own unwortbiness to be the successor of such an one as Bishop Patteaon. He hoped, however, with the assistance of those able and earnest men who were labor- I ing in the same cause, to be able to creditably carry on the work bf the mission, . The following resolutions were then canied J on the motion of the Bishop of Auckland, " That this Synod records its sincere thanks i to the members of the Church in Nelson and the neighborhood for the great kindnes* and hospitality which they have shown to those members of the Synod who hare come from other -parts of New Zealand to attend this Synod." " That the Synod records its thanks to the Nelson Club for the hospitality shown to; members of the Synod."" "That the \ thanks of the Synod be given to the secretaries for the efficient manner in which they had performed their duties." On the motion of the Dean of Christchurch it was resolved that the next triennial meeting of the Synod be held at Christchurch. j On the motion of the Bishop of Nelson the thinks of the Synod were voted to J. W. Barnicoat, Esq., for his services as Chairman of Committees; to Oswald Curtis, Esq.., for the kindly manner in which he had given the use 'of the Hall for the meetings,' and to the Press, for the attention' paid in publishing reports, notices, etc. .
