WELLINGTON RACES. Wellington, Friday. There were several very heavy showers during the night, but the strong S.E. wind that was blowing all the morning got the ground in fair condition. The attendance at 12-30 was only moderate. The first race was the Hurdle Race of 50 govs, two miles, over seven flights of hurdles. Sis horses came to the scratch, and a capital race ensued. All jumped well until the fifth hurdle, when Blue Jacket fell, but neither horse nor rider- were injured. St. Albans got away wrong coming up the straight, with Tommy Dodd close up all the distance, both plying whip and spur, but St. Albans managed to win by a bare length. In coming home Whalebone' threw his rider, who seemed hurt. Hutt Race-Course, Friday. Hack Hurdle Race of 15 soys. Post entries. Five started. Both the riding and jumping were rery indifferent, there being several spills'. The race was won easily by Murtagh on a Maori horse named Poenix; Straight Tip second. Maiden Plate, lOOsovs. One mile and a half. Four started, Lady of the Lake, Lady Mary Stirabout, and St Albans, the others being scratched. A good start was effected, Lady of the Lake getting away with the lead which she improved to ten to twelve lengths' and was never caught, winning as she liked. Stirabout cut tbe others down and made desperate efforts to catch Lady of the Lake. He came in second, Lady Mary third, and St Albans last..
Wellington, Friday. At two o'clock this morniug a fire occurred in Griffith's fancy biscuit and confectionery Euanufactory, Parish-street. Notwithstanding the hign wind the fireman were soon on the spot, and saved the building. Only the
oof was burnt, and the stock damaged. The machinery was saved. The insurance was £1000 in the Standard. The losses are represented at £1000. The All-England Eleven leave per steamer Rofcorua to-morrow to play at Nelson. It is not yet definitely arranged whether they are tc play at New Plymouth. Selby, the English cricketer, ran Donovan, a local pedestrian; this morning 100 yards for £30, beating him by 20 yards. Napier, Thursday. The nomination to-day occupied two hours. Five candidates were nominated, vgz., Tiffin, Sutton, Colenso, Buchanan, and Rhodes. The show of hands was in favor of Sutton, he having one more vote th_u Buchanan, and a poll was demanded by Tiffin. It will take place next Thursday. ' Balclutha, Thursday. The weather, is showery, but the river continues falling, and all danger is passed. The Island of Inchclutha continues half j covered with backwater. Great damage is done to the crops. Only one mail has arrived from Dunedin since Monday, causing great annoyance. New Plymouth, Thursday. Nominations for the Taranaki Jockey Club Handicap of 150 soys., close on Saturday next. Auckland, Thursday. • The Thurland Castle bas arrived from Loudon after a passage of 95 days. She has no immigrants bnt several passengers. Inspector Broham has gone to Wellington to attend the conference of Inspectors of Armed Constabulary, relative to the redistribution of the force. . Dr. Ackers, surgeon, and Miss Hamilton, matron, of the Lunatic Asylum, have resigned in consequence of dissatisfaction at the manner of conducting enquiries. During the passage of the Thurland Castle on December 12, on the watch turning out two were missing. It was suspected they were broaching the cargo. A'boy was sent down the hold, and found a man's hat. The forehold was then closed and a guard placed over it. Raps were heard below as a signal, and on the hatch being raised two men were discovered with two hottles of grog in each hand aud five more at their feet and a night light. One of the men had actually handed two bottles to the mate, supposing it was his shipmate. The men were placed in irons until arrival. Large quantities of hay and jstraw, for the 28 fallow deer, which have been safely landed out of the 32 shipped, was within two yards of the broached brandy cases, as also enough gunpowder to blow the ship to pieces. Traces of melted grease were found close to the gunpowder. Mr Nichol intends to withdraw his claim to the prize for tho Secret, but will substitute an application for return of entrance fee, and declaration from the Committee that all bets be considered off. Friday. Mr Buckland quotes fat cattle, 24s to 28s per lOOlbs; fat sheep, 2£d to 3d per lb. From nine oclock on Sunday morning to the same hour on Wednesday 2.390 inches of rain fell. Dunedin, Friday. At a meeting of the Taeri. Council yesterday it was resolved to bring the whole of the Counties Act into operation. The total valuation of the County is £124,585. It was decided not to allow the chairman any salary.
