EDUCATION BOARD.

Thursday, Jan. 4. Present — Messrs Barnicoat (chairman), Broad, Rout, Talbot, Leighton, Campbell, Fairhall, Holland, Dencker, Percy, Jackson, Shephard, Catley, Atkinson, Hill, and the Bishop of Nelson. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Secretary was authorised to procure a common seal for the Education Board. The Secretary was authorised to affix the Board's seal to Messrs Adams and Kingdon's appointment as solicitors to the Board. Mr S Grooby's tender of £30 for removing the teacher's house at Pangatotara was accepted, provided the taking down and vebuilding of the chimney be included in his offer. The following motion was lost on a division:—" That in future all cheques for money be sent to the persons entitled to receive them, and that the Finance Committee make detailed arrangements for the payments and receipts for money, founded upon the same plan as is at present adopted by the General Government." The following amendment was carried by six to five votes:—" That the further consideration of this question be postponed for a month." The Finance Committee was instructed to report upon tbe subject at next meeting. Resolved— That £25 be set apart for moving the Motupiko school-room to a more central and convenient site, to be chosen by the Committee, if the Inspector shall approve of the school being moved, and of the site chosen. Resolved-That £15 be allowed for fitting up the 4th division of the Bridge-st. school with desks, forms, and other school furniture. Resolved— That £150 be set apart for an addition to the Haven road school, and that the Secretary call for tenders, which the Committee is authorised accept. Resolved— That the Town Committee be authorised to employ a temporary teacher for the 4th division of Bridge-st. school for one month at a salary of £6. Resolved— That the girls in the upper classes of the Westport school be placed under the separate charge of a mistress, at a salary of £72. The inspector's report on punishments in the Nelson public schools was ordered to be printed, in order that it might be considered at next meeting. Resolved— That £140 be set apart for a master's house at Dovedale, to be built in accordance with plan and specification approved of by tbe Committee of Works. Resolved-That £62 10s be set apart for repairing and enlarging the school-room at Cobden, and for school furniture and porchdoors at Brunnerton, iron being recommended for the roof at Cobden. An application from the Collingwood Committee for £30 to complete the master's house and outbuildings was referred to. the Committee of Works, who were authorised to act in the matter. The Secretary was instructed to acknowledge the receipt of a letter from Mr Haselden. Resolved— That the tenders for leases of the Westport reserves be referred to the Finance Committee, with a view to its reporting on them at next meeting. Resolved— That Messrs Mackay and Hodgson be requested to act again as examiners for the scholarships in 1877. Resolved, also— That the programme of exanuation, as proposed in the examiners' report, be adopted, " Goldsmith's Deserted Village-* being struck out from the list of work to be taken up (at the suggestion of the Inspector), thus leaving the poem of <• The Traveller " only to be prepared. An application from St. Mary's Committee for £8 16s to defray the cost of closets, was referred to the Finance Committee. Notices of Motion. 1. By the Rev.
