EDUCATION BOARD.

FIRST MEETING. Thursday, December 7. " Present : Messrs Barnicoat, J-iekson, Wastney, Campbell, Leighton, Burrell, Holland, Talbot, Percy, Rout, Fairhall, Srfalcolm, Con-Jell, Dencker, Broa_, Burn, Pattie, Tarrant, Catley, Hill, and the Bishop of Nelson. J. W. Barnicoat, Eeq, was unanimously elected Chairman of the Board. Resolved, That lhe resolutions of the Central Board, passed at tbeir meeting held on November 2nd, be adopted. Resolved, That Mr W. C. Hodgson be appointed Secretary to tbe Education Board, and Inspector to the Nelson Education District. ■ Resolved, Tbat Messrs Adams and Kingdon be appointed Solioitors to the Board. A letter was read from the Board's Solicitors, advising the Board to register several conveyances and leases. Resolved, Tbat tbe Solicitors be inatructed to register tbe deeds in accordance with the above recommendation. A letter was read from the Pengatolara Committee, referring lo lhe master's house. Resolved, That until further notice Mr Hale be not required to reside in the teacher's house at the Pangatotara. Resolved, Tbat the •Secretary call for tenders — (1) for the removal of tbe master's house at Pangato the new school eite ; and (2) for tender^ for tbo purchase of tba house. Resolved, That £10 be allowed for supplying Fox Hill school with water. f Resolved, That from December Ist the Silary of tho mistress of the Toi-toi V-liey school be raised to £48 per annum Resolved, aleo, (alter a division) That the words "* With head money " be added, A tender having been received from Mr Job Lines, for 14 years' lease of No. 157, Westport, at £4 per annum, ii was resolved that the Secretory cull for tenders for leases of all uooecupiad reserves at Westport, such tenders to be sent in within two months of the date of ndvertiament. An application was read from the Wt'stport Athenseum Committee for a 14 years' lease of Education Reserve No. I, together with the old schoolaoom, at a yearly rental of £25. R_rolved, That t-be Secretary advertise 'for alternative teuders— - (1) for a 14 years' lease ofthe land and ouilJings ; (2) for tbe purchase of the building, the land to be let separately.

Resolved that a 14 yearß lease of No 220, Ahaura, at a yearly rental of ten shillings be granted to Mr Haswell. Resolved, That the Secretary be instructed to apply to the Colonial Treasurer for £2,523 out of the £50,009 set apart for school buildings, tbe sum to be applied for being the amount that the Secretary estimated would be required for buildings during tbe ensuing six months. The Secretary was instructed to acknowledge the receipt of a letter from the Secretary of the Upper Wakefiel i Committee. A letter was received from Mr A. Earsbman, one of the leasees of the Amurt Reserve, requesting the Board to make some abatement in his rent on account of the injury he had sustained from tbe delay that had taken place in getting the reserve surveyed, preparatory to its being fenced. Resolved, That a quarter's rent, £128 I7_ 6d, be remitted. Resolved, That a fourteen years' lease of Nos. 148 and 149, Ahaura, at a yearly ren'al of £1, be granted to Mrs M'lvbr. Resolved, That the highest tender for a fourteen years' lease of tha Pangatotara Reserve, that of Mr G. H, flatter, be accepted, and that a lease be prepared in the following terms:— One shilling per acre per annum for the first five years, one and threepence per acre per annum for tbe next five years, and one and sixpence per acre per | annum for the remainder of the term. Notices of Motion I 1. By the Rev J. Leighton— -That tbe Town Committee be authorised to J appoint a mistress lor the 4th division of the Bridge-street Sehool at £60 per annum. 2. That the Town Committee be authorised to fit up the above school with the requisite school furniture at a cost not to exceed £15. 3. That additional accommodation be provided at Haven-road School, tbe present building being overcrowded, and tbat a third assistant be appointed. 4. By Mr Campbell — - That the salary of the mistress of the Motupipi school be increased by £10 per year. 5. By Mr Barnicoat— That £25 be granted to the Motupiko Committee to enable them to remove the school to a more central and convenient site. Credit. balance at Uuion Bank, £5 10- ; at Bank of New Zealand, £182 6d ld.
