THE CENTRAL BOARD OF EDUCATION.
■ Thursday, November 2. Present: Messrs Barnicoat, Jackson, Leighton, Catley, Campbell, Shephard, Atkinson, Rout, Coodell, Fairhall, Talbot, Holland, Burn, Tarrant, Dencker, Malcolm, and the Bishop of Nelson. Resolved, That the Finance Committee meet on each Tuesday before the Board's monthly meeting, and that all accounts be submitted to the Committee for their approval, previous to tbeir being laid before the Board. Resolveid That the Town Committee be authorised to employ a temporary assistant, certified or otherwise, for a period not exceeding two mouths, to supply the place of Mr Sadd, second master of Bridge-street School, disabled for a time by sickness. The Secretary was instructed to acknowledge with thanks, the receipt of a letter from the Chairman of the Spring Grove Committee, giving the result of an enquiry into the case of the alleged ill-treatment of a boy at Spring Grove Sohool. Tbe proposition to increase the salary of the master of the Cobden School was lost on a division. The other three .propositions to increase teachers' salaries were then withdrawn. J Mr Dencker withdrew his motion. Resolved, That the Westport Committee be authorised to employ a third assistant at a salary of £36 per annum. , The Secretary was instructed to reply to a letter from the Secretary of the Upper Wakefield Committee, giving him the information that he asked for, as to the number of scholars in daily attendance at Upper Wakefield, and further referring him to rule 28 of the Board's bye-laws, which deals with the ; question of tbe maintenance of the fencing of reserves occupied by teacbers. • ■' , Resolved, That a letter from Mr Hale, faking the permission of tbe Board to live elsewhere than in the teacher's house, which is eudangered by the river be referred to the Pangatotara Committee, for their recommendation. t . The -Secretary was instructed to ascertain from the Colonial Secretary what funds will be at the disposal of the Board for the six months from January to June inclusive, 1877, and also to enquire as to the mode aod time of payment. The following notices of motion were given :—- --1. By Mr Holland— That £10 be allowed for a tube well at Upper Wakefield. By the Rev J. Leighton— That M-bb Sunley, being the mistress of an independent school, at Toi-toi Valley, be placed on the same footing as to salary as other mistresses of independent -schools. . 3. ,By Mr Shephard— That Mrs Lamb in be treated, as to salary, as tbe mistress of an independent school. Bank overdraft on November Ist £70 13 6d.
